940 Wheels on a 240 - Front Center Caps Won't Snap On

Just like the description says, I bought a set of 20 spoke 940 wheels to put on my 240 wagon. The back two center caps went on without a hitch, but the front two will not fit. I think that the hub is preventing them from snapping on. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks!

first, do the center caps have the circular wire spring in the groove on the inside? without that they won't stay on.

2nd, I just eyeballed my center-cap-missing 240's front wheel and my 740, and it does seem like the 240's bearing cap sticks out farther than the 740's. I noticed my 5-spoke Hydra wheels on my 740, there's kind of a nipple sticking out of the center inside of the cap, this might run into the bearing cap, and trimming it back might help. the Hydras use similar-but-different center caps than the 20-spoke Aries wheels you have.

(when I bought my 740, 2 of the 4 15" Aries were bent, and all 4 tires were bald, so it was the perfect time to score 4 16" Hydras from Craigslist, and get 4 new 16" tires).

They do have the spring in them. I will look when I get home and see if they have that nipple inside of them and if so, I will grind it back.

My question though, is if that doesn't work, what are my options? Is there a different center cap that I could use from a different sort of Volvo wheel? I really dig the wheels and was miffed when I couldn't get the center cap on the front wheels. I even took a rubber mallet to them!

not sure, but maybe pull the dust cap off the hub, and see if there is clearance so it could be binged in a bit with a ball peen hammer or something without hitting the end of the axle ?

I realize this is a very old thread, but I was interested in Pierce's reply about the circular tension ring in the center caps. I have a 1993 940 Turbo that I was trying to replace the center cap, but am unsure as to how or where exactly, and I guess how to place the spring....I assumed on the inside of the wheel, but it sounds like there's a spot where the ring fits inside the hub...??

Any help would be appreciated

there used to be a web page that had all the different volvo RWD wheels, but sadly, the owner let it lapse and its gone.

there's a lot of different wheels that might have come on a 940, can you post a picture of yours ?

for instance, my 92 came with these, "Ares"

but I replaced them with these, "Hydra"

on both those wheels, the center caps are snapped on from outside, you have to remove the caps before you can unbolt the wheels.

Center cap

Thanks for your response. I do have the Hydra wheels (never realized that was the name...I always called them mags).
Again these are on my 1993 Volvo 940 Turbo. You're saying however that the wheel actually has to be pulled off, to put that tension spring on the cap from the rear??

Thanks

no, the cap comes off, the spring goes around the inside of the 'fingers' on the inside of the cap, then is pressed back on the wheel from outside. all this with the wheel mounted on the car.

those flat silver caps come in at least two different sizes/types, the ones for the Hydra have the VOLVO logo in black, while the ones for the Aries have it in white, and they aren't interchangeable.

ah, here's a picture of the back of the cap with the spring installed...

OK thanks....that makes sense. I do have the Hydra...black logo....have the right replacement....the tension spring wasn't making sense with what I read BUT
you answered very clearly.

Once again, thanks for your help. I've got about 250K on mine currently. Shipped home my 1987 740 Wgn when I got reassigned by the Army back stateside many years ago, but honestly don't remember what the mileage was when I traded for the 1993 940.

I'm almost positive that the center cap popped or came off when I was up for my mother's funeral up in Northeastern Ohio near Lake Erie all the way from East Coast of Florida. Not just there, but all the way there and back, the roads were HORRIBLE....looked like tanks had been on them lol.

when I got the Hydras for my 740T wagon (the original Aries had two bent rims and 4 bald tires), the caps were broken and/or missing, I was able to buy 4 new caps and springs from Volvo. I have no idea if they are still available.

lets see.... part numbers... cap: 1343663, spring 1325483 ... looks like the caps are still available, part #9 here, https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/s...roduct=1113577 but the springs are NLA ?
