940T gas gauge problem
 

I've got a 1991 940 Turbo with a gas gauge read error. I've got at least 1/2 a tank in there as I recently replaced the sending unit with a brand new unit from FCPGroton and dumped 2-2.5Gal worth of gas in it. With key off, it reads on E and with key in ON position, it reads maybe 1/8th of a tank. Is the gas gauge removable or replaceable or must I replace the whole cluster to rule it out? Any help is greatly appreciated.

ok...15.5 gallon tank, right? Was the tank empty to begin with? Because 1/8th of 16 is 2, just curious. Do you think it should read higher or lower?

Definitely should read higher as I put in two 2.5Gal jugs of gas so that's 5Gal by me and my sister claimed she put in about $7 soo somewhere around an additional 2.8Gal for a total of 7.8Gal I should be somewhere close if not passing the 1/2 way mark. Yes, it was bone dry to start with because I dropped the tank and fully cleaned it before installing the new sending unit.

My guage worked fine until I replaced the intank pump. Now it seems off by a 1/4. I think we both have the same problem which is we turned it the wrong way when putting it in and the float is not moving properly. I have not taken mine back apart yet.

I installed the unit in the same positioning as the old unit I removed. The big fill hole was toward the left, vent above it, return line on bottom right, pump line on top right.. here's a rough idea of it.. I'll try to snap a picture when there is more light. Ill try messing with it and rotating the unit as much as I can but I don't see how there would be much more play as the fill tube is setup to be only on the left hand side and in the position I installed it..

what i mean is somewhere in the rotation of the sending unit, something got hung. I am digging in mine shorty........Film at 11

Ok, I went ahead and put a 150ohm resistor on the fuel gauge connector at the trunk and I got a reading of about 1/2 tank so I know the gauge is at least working. I pulled the sending unit and took a look at it. The little circular float is getting wedged at the very end of the tube and I shook it loose to try to get a reading on the gauge, it seems to not want to freely roll up and down on its own so I'm going to give FCPGroton a call. Thanks for the help!!

Edit: Looks like if the little metal contacts were moved in more away from the circular float it would let it float up much more easily. Seems like an easy fix.

I took mine all apart and heard it moving back and forth put it back in and still nothing. Shine a light inside and there is a half moon piece of plastic that the round unit sits in, maybe we are not laying it in there right. The float inside moved fine but why is the bottom spring loaded? i dont see the purpose unless it is supposed to be pushed in against the inside.
