Alternator??

Aigt, Got a 240 DL TWO DAYS AGO

Went to change the battery because i started it using the good optima red top battery in my Monte Carlo and i wanted to recharge the Die Hard it came with. So here's what i did

1. Put in the Optima Red Top
2. Started the car
3. Disconnected the Red top
4. As soon as i disconnected the red top, the thing died.

I took out the alternator and got it tested, it's fine, the VR is fine, the cables are all in good to perfect shape, what else could it be??

WHAT AM I MISSING?

Also, I am new to the forum and VOLVO's, I think the things are awesome, well... when i know how to make them run LOL

Thanks guys:D

RE: Alternator??

Sometimes the Alt doesn't start charging till the car is reved up.
Does it run ok? Does it have a low idle?

Everything might be ok with the car.

Have the charging system checked on the car.

RE: Alternator??

It is normal for them to die if the battery is disconnected, but you should never disconnect a battery from a running vehicle, unless you add a load across the terminals. On top of being a storage device, the battery acts as a filter/choke for the cars electrical circuits, and the lack of the battery in the circuit can cause a runaway current/voltage situation for the alternator, and the pulsing dc current and voltage spikes can damage other components . Sounds like the aternator is OK. You will need to charge the dead battery with a charger, or on another car, then install or install as is and jump start.
