B230 Timing Belt Alignment problem

B230 Timing Belt Alignment problem
1993 240 B230 engine. Cannot align marks on the belt with marks on the pulleys. Start at crankshaft pulley, double line in groove exactly aligns with engine mark and notch. Single line on intermediate pully - pully is very slightly off (counterclockwise of the timing cover mark. Single line on camshaft pulley ends up one notch counterclockwise of the mark on pully and timing belt cover. It appears that when I removed the old belt it also was one notch off to the left when all else was aligned properly.
Will the engine run properly with this situation? The timing marks on all three pulleys line up well with the engine marks.
I have done probably ten belts on B21 and B23 engines without a problem. This is the first time doing a belt on a B230.

Exactly...the belt marks will cause you more grief than anything. One thing to remember, the B230 had a harmonic balancer rather than a solid crank pulley. The rubber isolator will/can crack and allow the inner and outer portions to turn independently and cause mega grief on running issues until you catch it.

The belt for the 1993 B230 is 271747. The belt for the 1992 B230 is 271713. Is the problem that the belt is not marked correctly for use on the 1993? I have found other instances where parts on the 1993 do not match the shop manual. I am told that at the end of the model lifetime (1993 for the 240) sometimes parts are used from another model. Am I correct in understanding that as long as I have the marks on the crankshaft and pulleys properly aligned with the engine and timing cover marks I should be okay?

For 93, Volvo switched to a round tooth pulley/belt setup. Previous years used a square tooth setup. They are not interchangeable. Volvo was famous (or infamous) for using leftover parts. For 93, Volvo called in parts from all over the world. It's important to know Volvo assembled 240's in not only Sweden but Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Chile, South Africa, Thailand and Malaysia. When the word went out that 93 was the last year, Volvo had all leftover parts sent back to Sweden. It's rumored that the 93 Classic was a way to use up the black door handles left over from the 91 SE model. So...yes, it's important to visually compare new parts with the ones being replaced.

My belt walks off the cam gear...
Swift's last post has a ray of hope.. I have a 1992 745 na and the tBelt walks off the front of the cam gear. Suspected new head, swapped back the original, same problem. Discovered two bent idler brackets..this has been going on all year and I'm up againsta Dec 31st deadline. So..Swifty? How can I tell if I use a round tooth belt or a square? My previous 90 765T was square but this 1992 745 might have a different engine from the 1992 it is on the paperwork - even later than 1992, as it was bought from a broker who got it as an "insurance totalled" and it clearly had a brand new oilpan so we knew the engine had been out of it somehow..
