B230FT Timing belt change.
 

Hi all--

I am doing my timing belt tomorrow. I just have one thing that I am not so clear on. Before I have the crank pulley off is it important to line up the marks on the out side of the timing belt cover?

There is a tab that comes off of the lower timing belt cover that reads 2 0 10 and then off tab on lower timing belt cover another 0. Do i line up the mark on the crank pulley to that last 0?

It seems like the main concern is that I get the cam sprocket and intermediate sprocket lined up and then I hear the crank sprocket will line up by default.

So, do those marks on the lower timing belt cover matter? Or should I just get to the removal of the cover and the lining up of the different sprockets?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure it is lined up after the covers are off. The mark on the pulley and cover might not match up if the pulley is going bad and spins.

Thanks Tech. That is what I thought. I am thinking about replacing the pulley as well because the car is at 150k and am new owner so not sure if it has been replaced before.

Just for entertainment sake... if I were to try and line things up with the crank pulley and covers what 0 am I trying to line the pulley up with the first or second.

The number look like this: 2 0 10 0.

Where the last zero is on the lower timing belt cover and the 2 0 10 is on a tab to the left of it. Just curious what those numbers mean and their significance.

Check the pulley see if the rubber is swollen or cracked.

There should be a highrise by the middle 0 that it would line up with.

When the pulley is off there is a washer that is between the pulley and timing pulley. There is a slot on the top of the washer that lines up with a mark on the motor.

When reinstalling the pulley make sure it locks into the tooth on the timing gear before tightening the bolt.

Got er done. 7 hours later. Running like a champion. Tensioner really needed to be done and the belt was starting to wear at the sides exposing some of the metal. Car is at 150k and the last one was done at a 100k by the previous owner. Probably needed to do the seals, crank pulley, and accessory belts as well. That's a project for another time.

On the crank pulley the inner rubber was starting to crack but the two parts don't spin so I think I am good for a little while longer.

That counter hold tool works wonders.

That was a lot of work! Anyone have a quote of what that job would have cost me at a shop. The timing belt kit said estimated time 2 hours 20 mins.

It all depends on labor rates.
The time sounds about right.
