Backfire On Hard Acceleration

I've got an 89 240 wagon, in which somebody installed the turbo set-up out of a 740... It's an automatic.

Anywhoo, the thing runs beautifully, but gets bad mileage (about 18 mpg). Here's my deal I'm wondering about: When I "floor it" to accelerate (which I basically don't do unless I'm horsing around) the car will hesitate, "hard" backfire once, then take off.

What do you think might be causing that?

I'm not throwing codes. The thing runs smoothly. For the most part it idles nicely (sputters periodically). It doesn't bog or hesitate on normal acceleration, nor does it sputter at driving speed.

What are your thoughts? Is it possible that the poor mpg is connected?

Thanks!

I dont know alot about the turbos but my mechanic was talking to me about this because i was asking about installing a turbo on my 740, he said that it will hesitate more so because the turbo needs to spin up and get the right air or something. If its a HARD backfire though it might be something within the turbo thats not throwing codes.

Take that with a grain of salt, maybe check the turbo and see if everything is connected securely?
