Default Backup Lights

Backup lights on a '92, 240 wagon are not always functioning and I am thinking there might be something on the transmission that needs adjustment?
Thanks, Prairie

there is a reverse/park/neutral switch connected to the shifter, I think its on the left side down in the 'pocket' that the shifter assembly is in. the park/neutral part is for the starter interlock, and the the reverse swithc is for the backup lights.

I have the same problem on my '85. Pierce is right about the shifter; that ultimately didn't solve my problem. I plan on hard-wiring my tail lights soon as I figure the contact board is corroded or there's a short in the terminal for the tail lights.
