this is beginning to get not fun

as most of you know, i just bought a 86 Volvo 240DL...i'm sad to say that today was the first day i did any major driving with it and there are quite a few small problems: It's eating oil (over 1QT in less than 30 miles), the A/C is VERY hot, it seems like it might be overheating, it's running a bit rough, there's a weird buzzing/humming noise that's happening when i driver 80mph or faster and there's the problem of the OD refusing to come on...now i know some of these things can be cause because the previous owner didn't drive the car at all for the past year(as i was told), but i don't know...

I, too, have just bought a 240DL same year. Mine buzzes/hums when I press on the gas. I just figured that wa the way the car is,, being 20 yrs old. As for the O/D, I had the same problem which I fixed by replacing the relay (bought online for approx $40 incl. shipping). Now works fine. Good luck

It's eating oil (over 1QT in less than 30 miles)
I would not say that using 1qt of oil in 30 miles is a small problem. You either have a major leak or you are burning oil. To burn that much would create so much smoke you should be able to see it behind you.

Does the temp gauge show that it is overhot?

The rough running could be down to it standing around for so long but, if it is burning oil it could be down to that.

I had an 82 240 which used to hum along quite well. I took it to an independent mechanic who listened to it then pronounced, "Stick with it. If the hum stops your petrol pump has died". I stuck with it.

check the flame trap if it is clogged oil will pressurize and blow out the cap and any other hole it can find, sometimes it even blows out the engine seals. It is about $2 to replace. I check mine at every oil change. It takes 2 minutes. Yours is down low and is harder to get to. You can get a flame trap relocation kit from ipd.
