what auto trans is it ? I’m going to service and possibly throw a shift kit in. Picked it up for 750$ last night. Snow tires, new timing belt , water pump , coil recently changed. It won’t go into overdrive, and if I’m accelerating hard it won't
up shift unless I place it into neutral and back into d. If I accelerate mellow everything is good and the kick down works fine- except od and the little arrow is lit up. I’ve built 2 dozen auto trans but haven’t touched a Volvo auto yet.

230k miles on car. Worst case I can use it for parts on my
wife's 93’ 240 wagon

almost certainly its a AW70, which is an Aisin Warner (Toyota), same basic transmission was used in 1980s Toyota 2WD pickup trucks, and Turbo Supras

make sure the transmission throttle cable isn't stuck fully pulled, thats a common failure mode, which will result in a transmission that won't upshift because it thinks you've got the pedal to the floor.

the OD light is controlled by an OD relay. when the light is lit, then OD (4th) is disabled, when the light is out, then 4th/OD is enabled. When the light is lit the OD solenoid is UNpowered, when the light is off, then the OD solenoid is powered, this solenoid is on the side of the transmission and works a hydraulic valve.

ill check the tv cable. Looks like ipd has an od delete.

i drive in the mountains a lot, so really appreciate being able to disable OD to descend a grade, or keep the tranny from hunting between 3rd/4th when climbing a grade... So I'd probably try and fix the OD relay

First thing I check when it won't shift into overdrive is the overdrive relay. They are a common failure point. I just remove it and check the solder joints on the little circuit board in the relay. They develop cracks over time. Re-flowing the solder on them typically fixes the problem. If that doesn't fix it, check the wiring to the solenoid on the transmission. I have seen flaking insulation from this wire causing it to short against a ground point.

Climbing under it tonight. The exhaust is busted near the muffler and I may drop the pan and throw a new filter in the trans. I found some info on dropping the valve body modding the accumulators. If anybody has a diagram of the valve body I’d be willing to open it up and drill some
holes , tweak some shift timing springs and share my results

fyi, the 'filter' in these trans is a thin metal screen, it can be cleaned and reused, it only needs to be replaced if its damaged. do check it to ensure its not full of metal crud, if it is, thats a sure sign the tranny is on its last legs.

you can somewhat modify how the tranny shifts by adjusting the throttle pressure cable, but the correct setting is generally optimal.

the 740/940 turbos use a beefier version of the same tranny, known as a AW71, with the same gear ratios. you would want one from a 1990+ turbo as the LH 2.4 system in a 1989+ non-turbo requires a crank position sensor cutout in the bell housing.
