Default Brake Failure Light

My brake failure light is on. It was not on when I bought the car. Come to find out they had unpluggged the sensor so that who ever bought the car wouldn't see the light and freak out. Anyhow, I talked to a guy at a garage and he said that I can take the sensor off of the proportioningvalve (which has 50 different names) and have someone push on the brake pedal while I put it back on that that should reset it. Well.... the little switch is made of plastic or something similar and I'm not sure what to use to get it off. It doesn't appear to be the shape of a nut and I'm afraid to use pliers for fear of breaking it. It would help if I could see the top of it but with the way it's mounted I can't. Sooooo.... can someone tell me what I need to remove the blasted thing?
