buying a 240

I plan to buy a 240 as transportation while I am getting my MBA. However, I have a somewhat skeptical father who doesn't know a lot about Volvos. What should I tell him (honestly) about the 240 series to sway his thoughts in my favor? I am considering a sedan and am currently looking at a nice one with 298k and a 5 speed.

I would stress the safety factor, as well as the long life they live. I don't what price range you are looking at, but I posted a 84 240 Turbo Wagon on the classifieds here, I am asking 2K but am negotiable. They truly are wonderful cars, maybe introduce him to this forum and let him read some postings here. Good luck on the MBA and your search for a 240.

Volvos are really reliable, well some problems there and here. Just a few fix the car still runs strong. I own three Volvos myself, and I love the product and a Volvo fan for life.

It is simply the best car I have ever owned. 88 240. 238,000 trouble free miles.

I just got my Volvo 240 yesterday. It's a 240GLE (1991). There are little minor repair needed. But overall, it's a lovable car. Roomy, steady, relatively good on gas, definately reliable. Mine even has a JVC stereo (single CD). All power options in good shape. So far so good.

You failed to inform us on how many miles you have on the 240. Remember to check your timing belt. It is a non-interference one. You will enjoy, and my switch your dad over the Volvo world.

The odometer on my 240 is dead. It stoped at 80k's which I have doubt..... I took the odometer apart today and found the small driving gear all torn up. The engine is still very neat although I can smell a little oil burnt. The engine is quiet and smooth. Today is only the second day with the 240. Like I said, so far so good.

RE: buying a 240

I have owned an '89 240DL Wagon for all of 3 months. mine has abt 150kmiles on the clock...it is by far the most reliable and dependable of all the Volvos built(IMO)and ofc it is the most endearing car I have owned since my 1966 VW Beetle.I absoluteley LOVE IT.When I first got mine it had a problem that was causing strain on the whole drivetrain. For 2 weeks I drove it around until I discovered what was going on....the ac compressor would not go off and the clutch and then the ac comp.seized and would cause alot of strain on the engine and transmission...then the fanbelt that connects from the eng.to the ac comp.broke and all of a sudden I had all this power and acceleration that had been lacking up to that point...but 240's are built tough and my car is fine with no ill effects...the inline 4 cylinder is simple and is simply
one of the most enduring engines in the automotive world!!!the only downside is that when the fanbelt broke I lost my power steering cuz that unit is connected to the ac comp..Now I know why these cars have been nicknamed "Bricks".Try steering a 4300lb.car without powersteering haha...Anyway I will always have a 240! If this one dies for any reason I would not hesitate to buy another...they are simply one of the best Volvo's ever made.Good Luck with convincing your dad.You can let him read this forum and ask questions himself...but what I have said is true!By the way whatever you do dont buy any Volvo after 1998 cuz after that year Ford took ownership and those cars are not worth a damn...seriously.... BNE

I have an '86 with 189,000 miles. I've had minor problems, but nothing I couldn't handle. As for as I'm concerned, I think it's a great car. Go for it.
