Buzzing fuel pump relay...HELP!
ive got an odd problem...when i turn the key to the ON position (not started) the rpm needle shoots from 0-rpm max and the fuel pump relay buzzes really really loud. I know its not a bad fuel pump relay because i just got my new one from fcpgroton and it still does it.
Any one have any ideas? any help will be appreciated |
I seriously doubt that it is the relay buzzing considering that it is a new one "and still does it". Are you sure the sound is coming from the relay? The speedo needle shooting up is an electrical fault in the speedometer unit most likely.

Yes, I am 110% positive it is the relay buzzing, i can tell by touching it while its buzzing. And it does it with either the old or the new one in. When I take the relay out, it doesnt do it; I put it back in and the buzzing comes back. so loud you can hear it 20 feet away from the car.
Also, since it started doing it, it no longer starts. it turns over but it doesnt catch. I'm guessing it might be a fuel pump problem? |
OK, I believe you. Yea, seems like one of those Volvo electrical gremlins we all dread to deal with. I am oftem stumped by those and I got a few of my own in my cars, unfortunately... But at least if the car doesn't start you can solve it, worse to be intermittent. You'd be right to look at the fuel pump and associated electricals.

replaced the fuel pump today. the first time i turned the ignition on, the fuel pump primed and the relay was silent! but after the first time, whenever i turned the ignition on the buzz was back and the fuel pump didnt do anything.
anyone? :( |
What year and model is this? What engine?
|
I was having the same problem.... sorta. I was having the buzzing from the fuel pump in the gas tank, I replaced it and now no buzzing. The issue I now have is that the engine will not crank. My vehicle is a 1979 Volvo 242 GT with the what i believe to be the b23e engine

its a 1993 940 turbo. i talked to a mechanic and he said its possibly because the Fuel pump relay isnt getting power, which in turn isnt giving power to the fuel pump. so i'm taking it in tomorrow and crossing my fingers!
ill let you know how it goes. also if you have any suggestions, let me hear them, itll give me some things to suggest to the mech. |
Problem Solved ----- for me at least
I ended up fixing my problem by sanding the contacts for the main fuel pump fuse and replacing the fuse.
For your 1990 you might check out: http://volvoadventures.com/howtodofuelpumprelay.html It allowed me to eliminate possible problems. Steve |

Now. After chasing all the components indivedualy and testing them. Turns out I found a damiged ground at the fuel rail making internet contact. Hope this helps some one in a bind more the the plane in orbit. |
you're welcome. well, since it is solved by 'making internet contact' maybe the space plane did help! have a wonderful day.
