Car Battery
I bought my 1990 volvo 240 about 2 years ago. I worked some overtime at my job, so I figured since my volvo is my only car I should replace the battery on it as maintenance rather than wait for it to go out. That and there is white powder coming from the connection terminals(does that mean it's leaking acid?). My dad was telling me he bought a car battery that looks like a 6 pack of cans and doesn't require water. It sounds pretty cool I would like to get one like it. Has anyone heard of this type of car battery? Would it work ok in my volvo?

Sounds like an Optima Battery to me! Great batteries, just not cheap. If you look up the right amperage for your car, it will work! The white residue on the battery is due to corrosion. Not a big deal, just clean it. When you put your new battery in buy a small foam pad that they sell at the parts store or there's also a grease you put on the terminals and stops corrosion! |
ya, that's it! i called the auto part store by my house and they said that optima doesn't make one that would fit in my 1990 volvo dl. man, i really want one. is there a way around this?
|
I went on their website and they don't offer anything for Volvo.....Interstate makes a great battery also.
|
There's a lot of room where the battery sits in my car. Can a Optima battery that is bigger just sit there? The battery I have now isn't fastened or anything. It just sits there.
|
Well... Basically the battery should be somehow attached to the vehicle so that it will not be able to slide around and possibly cause a short circuit at some point.
Optima might no have any Volvo's listed on their site, but if you just take the physical measurements/style and CCA's of your current battery, you should be able to match them for an Optima. |
Would this battery work in my 1990 volvo dl 240? what about the size of it...how could i make it fit? and are cranking amps ok?

What about Bosh batteries? Are they as good as optima or interstate megatrons? i found one for $100 with a 3 year direct replacement.
|
Just get a battery that has the cranking power you need and put it in there. You can get generic tie downs and make anything fit.

Since your 240 is a 90,does it have the plastic battery tray?
Find a early 80's model 240,as they have a metal tray. The metal tray is about a inch wider and a optima battery will bolt into these. Dan |
ya, but this is my only car is important to me not to get stranded...so i would like a good quality battery. i was comparing bosch with optima and the bosch has a 3 year direct replacement warranty why the optima has only a 2 year. i found this puzzling since optimas were supposed to by one of the best and are more expensive than the bosch.
i have a metal tray i believe because it is so corroded. |
I don't see how the length of the warranty has anything to do with the quality of the battery. Hyundai and Chrysler give you the longest guaranties, wonder why? Bosch parts of late are getting shoddy--they put their name on everything but the quality is not like it used to be.
