Changing stock radio

Hi Guys my speakers are shot and I still have my stock radio in my 1989 740GL, I use to change radios in pre 85 model american vehicles, is it a hard task with a 89 volvo , I don't won't cause my car to lock ignition or something if I disconnect the radio...
Please advise...

RE: Changing stock radio

If you replace the radio buy the plugs that connect to the factory wiring. If you try to cut and wire a new radio in there is wires that if you don't get them hooked up you will lose your headlights.
Other than that you will be fine with putting an aftermarket radio in.

I'm looking into this too as my door speaker fell apart. I found this excellent FAQ on the radios
http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/RadioAntenna.html][/URL]

The original front speakers are 6.25" but the magnets are kinda small by modern standards. They are also cut down at the top & bottom so you may have to go smaller to a 5.25" front speaker to fit the grill. The rear door speakers are 5.25.

They are also 8 ohm units (most present-day speakers have 4 ohm impedance). Some Volvos have an amplifier in the dash others don't. To put a new head unit in I was told the amplifier had to be bypassed?

Anyway, the stereo store I talked to wanted almost $600 US for a medium priced CD/MP3 head unit, speakers, and wiring harnesses (installed). Too much... so I priced a Volvo replacement speaker from a dealer: $49. (If your grills are broken that's another $55)

I'm still deciding what to do. Crutchfield only has 4 ohm speakers, $49 to $89 per pair.
