clutch replacement

Hi all, I was wondering if somebody can help. I need to do the clutch on my 1991 240 5 speed. My mechanic shot for $ 1050. He says that there is a part that needs to be machined, he says it's something that will make the clutch not wear as much. Any info on that?
I do my regular work on my volvo, and I was wondering how difficult it is to do the clutch. I was thinking to do it myself. I found a clutch kit for sale on www.car-stuff.com for $ 170. Any othe part that I my need?
Thanks for your help

Do you look extremely rich? I can't think of,nor can I find, any part that needs to be machinedwhen replacing a clutch on any car.

Clutch replacement is not too hard a job but can be awkward if you don't have a lift or hoist to get underneath easily. Having said that, I have replaced many clutches using a hydraulic jack and axle stands.

You will need a clutch alignment tool which you could probably hire. Or you need a new mechanic.

Thank you man. I wish I was rich, but that ia not the case! I will do the job myself and at tha same time look for a new mechanic!
Do you know if I need any gaskets to go with the clutch kit?
Thank you again.

No gaskets needed but replace the whole unit - disc, pressure plate andrelease bearing.

After you remove the bellhousing bolts, take off the crossmember, and unbolt the driveshaft etc. then you have to rotate the transmission 90 degrees so that it clears and you can withdraw it. You will see what I mean when you get to that point. Test the clutch plate to see that it fits on the splines of theimput shaft before you boltit up.Do not set it on your chest like I did, this was a mistake and I found myself trapped for a little bit (it is heavy)
