Default Control Rod Loose From Transmission Lever On My Automatic 1992 240

So, just started to back out of the garage and, all of a sudden, my gear shift got stuck in neutral and then started shifting without engaging the transmission at all. Pushed it back into the space and, taking a look underneath, I realize the control rod's completely detached from the lever in the transmission. I can re-attach it, but it just comes loose again when I shift. It seems like something should be in there to hold the control rod in place with the transmission lever, but I don't know what because I can't seem to find any documentation on what everything should look like down there.

Attaching a couple shots, one with a circle around the area that's coming un-attached since the angle's a bit off.

Any advice or help you all might be able to give would be MUCH appreciated. I'm from Brooklyn but in LA for a few months, so I don't have my usual mechanic to lean on here (have yet to find a new one).

Thanks in advance!

so is your part 41 coming apart? so the angle piece and the barrel piece are seperating? if so, you'll need to replace it (or somehow repair it, its not meant to come apart).

Otherwise, if part 41 is coming off the lever 36, then you probably need to replace the bushings, washers, clip at 42, 43 and 44.

p.s. while you're in there, replace bushings 42 and 47 and your shifting will be crisper. if your lever is sloppy, replacing both 4's and 35 will tighten it up. 8 is the shift gate if screw 9 works loose, that gets sloppy feeling. 14 is the park/neutral safety switch. don't overtighten small screws.

No, assuming 45-49 are the pieces attaching to the transmission itself, it'd be 46, 47, or 48 that's missing/broken. That photo's taken right next to the transmission, not under the shifter. Honestly, just seems like it's missing a bolt or something that'd attach the rod to the selector, but I'm not sure.

ah. your picture shows the part 41, which belongs on the shifter side, thats the adjustment for rod length. is your rod on backwards?

note there's two versions of the control rod itself, 38 and 39... I think 39 is the later type, 38 is earlier..

Weird. Well, I ended up shifting the transmission by hand from underneath and getting it to a good garage nearby. They were able to swap in a new control rod and threw in some new brushings while they were at it. All's now good, but thanks much for the help.

yeow. shifting by hand from underneath while the engine is running??? eek.

or wait, shift to drive, but the shifter lever is still in "N" or "P", so you were able to start it in gear? thats less eek, I guess.

This happened to me today. Part #381825 is what's needed but that's not available anymore. It's called adjusting sleeve. Pierce is right about the #41. The Volvo diagram looks backwards for some reason.

note the picture of the car on that parts diagram. front of the car is off the left of the drawing, as the transmission is in FRONT of the shifter, so all that linkage is on the left side of the car.

and not surprising parts are rapidly becoming unobtanium, Gheely wants you to buy a brand new V60 or whatever. Ford started it.

btw, this thread was from 2013

Same problem for me. Is there any way to get these parts somewhere?

off a parts car at a junkyard, probably same part on any automatic volvo 240/740/940 since the mid 80s

or... I wouldn't think it would be that hard to fabricate with hobby shop metal working tools.
