converting pre 86 240 headlights to turn off with ignition

I just sold an 85 244 to my brother in law 2 days ago. Today i had to jump his battery for leaving lights on. He has been driving my 89 for 2 years and is used to the auto turn off feature with the headlights. Does anyone have experience adding this feature to a pre 86 240? I have harnessing available from an 88.

On a side note, the brake lights would not work in this car, even with new circuit board and bulbs. I finally gave up and plugged the rear fog light harness into the brake light switch. Only problem is it only works when headlights are on. Any ideas on how to untie this from the headlights?

you may need a new headlight switch ?

on a 1987/88 240, the ignition key switch "X" output, on in accessory and ignition, goes to fuses 1-2-3 via a yellow wire, and is connected to the headlight switch "X" input, of which pin 56 is a blue-white wire to pin 86 of the headlight relay.

on a 1985, the plus terminal goes directly to pin 30 of the headlight switch, and there is no headlight relay.

so me thinks you'll need to add that headlight relay to the circuit, as otherwise all the headlight juice will flow through the ignition switch, and thats too much current. note, I'm NOT talking about the high/low 'step' relay, thats different.

on the 87/88, this headligth relay is wired as follows...

green red wire from rightmost terminal by fuse 7 (this si always on, unfused power) goes to headlight relay pin 30
headlight switch pin 56 output goes to blue-white wire to headlight relay pin 86. relay pin 85 is grounded (this is the coil circuit).
relay pin 87 goes to the yellow wire that goes to the headlight 'step' relay.

sorry I can't copy these wiring diagrams, they are heavily copy protected.

Thank you very much I think I can follow without a diagram. I will work on this over the weekend (finally some 70 degree temps after this wretched winter! )
