Default Couple of questions, 88 244 m47 (CC, clutch, power steering questions)

First off, I am interested in getting my cruise control working. The cruise control has not worked since I purchased the car. What typically fails in the cruise control system that makes it not work?

Also, I am considering a clutch change. It is REALLY difficult to get into first and second gear. 3rd, 4th, and 5th work perfectly, but 1st and 2nd seem as if I am not even using the clutch, or even worse than that. Also, if I floor the car while in low RPMs, the engine revs up rather than actually speeding up.

Finally, I am having a power steering issue. I have replaced the reservoir, replaced the power steering pump, and all the hoses, utilized stop leak, yet I still go through power steering fluid like it's going out of stock.

Thanks!

Oh ps, has anyone done a brake job on a 240 with a broken brake caliper bolt?

Most often, the cruise not working is a simple matter of some previous owner not hooking vac hoses up properly. Unlike may cars, the vac servo is inside your car, above the gas pedal and as such, isn't exposed to the elements as are most. There is a cruise module under the driver's knee bolster that occasionally fails as well as a vac dash pot mounted to the passenger firewall. Additionally, there are switches on both the brake as well as clutch pedals to disengage the unit. Finally, there is the turn signal stalk that has wiring running down the column controlling it all. As I mentioned, lots of times it is the vac hoses under the hood. After that I'd check the unit on the firewall to make sure it's getting vac. Then I'd make certain the pedal switches are hooked up...sometimes an errant foot will knock one loose. Beyond that, it's time to drag out a multimeter and a Green book.

Well so far I've reattached the disconnected wire going to my brake pedal but still no luck. Moving on the the vac servo and, (hopefully not but...) signal stalk. Any ideas on the power steering problem?

Undo the boots on the inner tie rodes. Check if fluid is in there.

What do you mean broken caliper bolt?

Really? Weird. Get new bolts. I guess you're going to have to use one of those bolt removers that you drill in.

Wait for the experts.

Yeah I'm just going to go for it and see what happens. Figured out my clutch problem yesterday too, after months of busting knuckles on the ash tray trying to slam into first, it turned out to be the most simple fix imaginable. The stupid metal plate that prevents you from going into reverse when you don't want to was to far to the right, so I didn't have the clearance to get into first and second. Once I unscrewed the plate and moved it over a quarter inch, wah-la! Shifts smooth....

When we first got the 244, our boots where filled with PS fluid. We just rebuilt the rack, and hope it doesn't happen again. So far so good
