door locking
Ok, all my doors lock when the drivers door is closed and I push down on the door lock and it unlocks just as it suppose to but if I have the drivers door open and try to lock all the doors by pushing down on the drivers lock it will not.
You cant physically even lock the drivers door if its open. Now if I close the door and go around to the passenger side and reach across all doors lock just like it suppose to. I thought I would see if anybody had any idea why its doing this before I pull the door panel off. |
Drivers door needs to be locked with the key. The reason it unlocks when you close the door is because they made it that way so you cannot lock your car with the key still in it.

Ok, it just started doing this; so must of fixed it self. Thanks

My Volvo is a 1983. It centrally locks using the key or the driver's side knob. I took the door panel off and discovered the wire insulation attached to the drivers side knob was brittle and like powder. I cut the wires leaving enough length to attach a little extra wire and attached the extra wire covering it with shrink wrap. The wires were shorting and making the locks unlock. It was very frustrating but with new insulation, everything is like new. The wires have been bending and straightening for 35 years and the insulation gave up the ghost. I recently did the same process for the windshield washers which also had degraded insulation. Good luck.

I'd likely want to replace the whole wire all the way from end to end, rather than splicing. most everything in volvo-land uses standard 'spade lug' connectors, these are readily available, that wire goes through the door hinge and heads to the door locking relay under the dash.
