Ecu options for bolt on turbo?
 

Hi everyone, its my firt post. Lets just say I'm not totally new to the volvo world, but I have recently gotten into the idea of modifying mine. I have an 89 240 wagon m47. Well, I want to turbo it. I read all over the internet on how its done but NO ONE ANYWHERE has answered this question....at all. And its been driving me bonkers. If I buy all of the components, such as turbo, downpipe, manifold, would I need the turbo ECU? SWay I found a 940 turbo, What would I need to take from it? What kind of ECU would I need? And what the heck do people mean when they talk about ecus with "updated chips"? Thanks a bunch!!!

Haha a chipped ECU is a computer chip to change the fuel injection map to add more fuel cause of the more air your adding chipping the ECU is the easyest way to do it but on the stock setup you may not even get 5psi I'm not sure I'm more of a BMW guy

What are you looking for high HP or just a turbo to say you have one

To be honest I'm looking for some performance. Not insane amount of hp but I would like it to have some pep. What are my options?

For the ecu I would go buy a mega squirt you can go wrong with one yes its a lot around 900 bucks but well worth it you can plug n play right in your car run launch control tune your car for street drag or track this is a full standalone system that is awesome you'll need to mod the engine for how you want your setup but you can make high HP numbers with this ECU I have a BMW e30 turbo an I'm running an HX35 (Cummins turbo off a diesel trucks) Mega squirt ecu an I have 3 fuel maps that runs at 16psi 10psi an 7psi with a launch control system

But I what did was got the mega squirt got the motor running on it changed out the air flow meter with a GM air flow sensor fuel pump injections distributor with coil packs n this was all before I put the turbo on it

If you are interested in "turboing" your 240, I suggest that you check out Turbobricks.com as they have a lot of info on this sort of project.

If I was to do it, I would try to find a wrecked 740 or 940 turbo and take the engine from it. There are many differences between the turbo and non-turbo b230 engines. The turbos have dished pistons that lower the compression ratio to avoid detonation. Also, the turbo heads have different valves that handle stand up under the higher heat.

If you take an engine from a wrecked 740/940, grab the ECU, air mass meter and the wiring harness as these all need to match.

Other items needed: all the plumbing for the turbo and intercooler. Higher flow in-tank and main fuel pump (I think).

It starts to add up. Better to just get a running 740/940 turbo and go with it.

740/940 wiring harnesses are fairly different than 240's. on the LH2.4 cars (1989+ non-turbo and 1990+ turbos), the ICU is on the right side on the 240 and on the left on the 7/9 (the ECU is on the right side of both). Also the fuse/relay panel are way different (ok, a 240 doesn't even HAVE a relay panel, relays are mounted all over the place randomly, while on a 7/9, they are mostly all in the central console).

so... you'll need to do some wiring modification to a 7/9 harness to fit it to a 240.

the 7/9 turbo setup is more about gobs of low end torque than it is about top end HP... they used taller rear end ratios to go with this.

I agree with act1292, find a clean 940 turbo, newer the better (the 94/95's have piston oil squirters). the 940's ride quieter, are more comfortable inside, have generally better electrical systems, and bigger brakes.
