Engine Knocking
I have a 1992 240 GL, B230F, with 88,000, dealer serviced since new, one owner and upon cold start up there is a knocking noise (not valvles). After driving for a couple of miles it goes away and runs perfectly. Had it checked by the dealer locally and said not to worry and normal for a B230F and could be wrist pin slap, piston slap. The two techincians which looked at it have a combined 70 years Volvo experience, but it still makes me nuts, espcially with only 88,000. Anyone have this same problem?

RE: Engine Knocking
I have a 93 with 172,000 on it and it has never knocked. Kinda sounds like the oil is not getting everywhere as fast as it should. I use 5W30 synthetic in everything I own. Depending where you live you may consider 0W30 oil. But I would think with that much experience that theses mechanics would know.

The B230's are known for it.
I see it all the time. |
RE: Engine Knocking
Hi,
I have a 1990 240DL, it has the same little knocking sound. 270,000km on it. At normal opertation temperature, it's practically unnoticeable. I guess you just have to be very gentle on it when it's cold. I know I drive the car very cautiously for a kilometer or two, especially in the winter. Appart from this, the engine is very good, doesn't consume oil or anything else. A real tank. Paul |
