Fan clutch replacement

1990 DL 240 wagon B230f engine.

Not a problem post, just an observation. Today, I replaced the fan

clutch. I noticed the other day the temp gauge started climbing while

standing in traffic. I have scoured the web, and it appears the only

reliable way to diagnose a failing fan clutch is substitution. When spun

it acted not very different from the original unit. When I test drove the

beast, the AC worked better, right off the bat. I live in Georgia, so I opted for the tropical version, the temp gauge has yet to

get to the 1/3 point. It was an easy install. So if yours is the original

like mine, it might be time. Just in case thanks to all who have

responded to my posts.

Just a few questions since I was considering this same job recently.

- about how much was the new clutch and where'd you find it.

- how much trouble was it to do the job?

Fan clutch

Is where I bought mine it was $65 plus shipping.

The job is really pretty easy, Prior to this I would soak the 10 MM nuts that mount the fan clutch with PB Blaster. I rounded one of mine off, but it was no biggie, Just used vice grip pliers and it was off. Found replacement nuts at Advance Auto.

Loosen the shroud (two Phillips screws) and remove the fan 10 mm socket wrench. Then remove the nuts (also 10 MM) on the fan. Install the new one and reverse the steps and you are finished. As in my post it did make a difference. Oh by the way, check the rubber mounts that keep the radiator from rocking back and forth, they are on top of the radiator and easy to remove. Mine are worn, I had to replace my radiator in my 960 because the nut was a little loose on one side and the port on the top tank separated.

Good luck it is an easy job.

I think I'll keep driving it in the hot summer weather and see if it really is in need of a fan replacement or what. I wish it were a little easier to diagnose positively. Oh well, figuring out the problem is half the fun.

Thanks a ton for the information. I'll keep it in mind! Great instructions too!

take care and good luck with the repairs.

If you think for a minute that the fan clutch is going bad, just replace it. For 65 dollars it is better to be safe then sorry.

haha. that's what I've heard about all the 50 or 60 dollar parts I've been questioning lately. pretty soon it's a few hundred. I'm going to have a volvo "expert" give it a once over and tell me which parts he doubts. then I'll splurge a bit on replacement parts. I'm wary to spend a bunch of money here and there ever since someone told me I needed a head gasket replacement, and I determined otherwise after just a few minutes of inspection. We'll see.
