Fuel pump noise

I have been through two main fuel pumps trying to get the noise quieted down. I first replaced the in tank pump and inlet screen. Could the fuel pressure regulator be the culprit?

RE: Fuel pump noise

Check your fuel pressure and see if it is high. I doubt it though. if the fuel pressure is high the car runs very rich and I would think you would notice how badly it is running. Is your tailpipe black and sooty? Have you changed your fuel filter? If it is clogged it will make the pump loud.

RE: Fuel pump noise

Most of the time the main pump is noisy when the intank pump is not working or is clogged.

RE: Fuel pump noise

I thought the same thing, in tank pump was weak. The first thing I did was replace the intank pump and pickup screen. Then I replaced the main fuel pump and filter. Still noisy. I ran it that way for a while and thought maybe the new main pump was bad from the start. Put in yet another main pump and filter. I have just lived with it for a few months and trying to figure out what else it might be. The car runs ok, but that's a good suggestion to check the fuel pressure. Maybe I'll pop for a new regulator anyway, it is still original.

Any other ideas?

Also when you replaced the intank pump did you install a new hose?
You might also want to check the baffles in the tank.

I haven't looked in the tank for 12 years or so. How could the baffles make the fuel pump noisy?

I didn't replace any hose outside of the tank.

I just got a new fuel pressure regulator but have not put it on yet, later today.

RE: Fuel pump noise

If the baffles break loose inside the tank it can knock the fuel pump off of the hose on the sending unit.
Then since it isn't really sucking fuel then it will be noisy.
I was talking about the hose between the sending unit and the pump.

Update on this?

Hi lleroyb,

Your post is old but we never know. I am encountering the same problem, I just changed the main fuel pump + fuel filter the replaced the in-tank fuel pump with the upgrade from IPD. I saw on youtube that it seemed to help by bringing more flow. It came with new in-tank socket and new hose connecting the pump and sending unit.

I can hear both pumps working but I still have the cavitating noise from the main fuel pump...

Did you find out what was causing yours to be noisy? Fuel pressure regulator? faulty fuel injectors? FPR? Fuel line? wrong voltage? Failing ECU?

Thank you!
