Fuel tank replacement, trailer hitch
 

The thirty two year old tank came out and was replaced with a 30 year old tank....that leaked. The cars name is now Roseann Roseanna Danna, cause it's always something.
Any comments on non oem tank solutions? Most of the replacement tanks do not have a drain plug. In the age of garbage gas it seems like a good idea. Yea new fill hoses and the line to the center pump would be in order as well.
Are the fuel tank bolts used to keep the trailer hitch receiver in place?

The trailer hitch I have on my 240 (you don't mention what model you have) bolts on using the bumper mount bolts and does not affect the gas tank. I have had my gas tank out without removing the hitch.

I had my tank out due to a leaky filler tube. The filler tube is aluminum while the tank is steel. The two unlike metals cause a reaction where they meet and corroded through the aluminum causing leaks when I filled the tank.

Regarding a drain plug, I haven't seen any of the OEM tanks with one either.

Checked the filler neck, and the filler neck gasket o ring and saw no sign of leakage.
Same with the fuel sending unit and lines. . Just a line of seepage at the fuel tank seam, , no sign of fuel running down. I was wrong about the drain Too many old car memories fogging the brain.
I am told that the 86 thru 89 cars use a different fuel tank. Will replace fuel lines filler neck gasket, sending unit o ring. O well.
Is the oem hitch a piece of of round steel tubing? Do you know if there is a difference in model years for the hitchs? Drawtite seems to work for all years. I saw one (oem) offered for sale but is a distance away and would involve freight.

I have searched for a mystery schematic that was from the early part of the century showing how to power trailer lights on my 245 without tripping the dash warning light. Any suggestions?
Recommendations on trans coolers and locations?

My hitch is a Drawtite. I don't have any experience with an oem hitch. My hitch wiring just taps into the brake, taillight and signal wires. It does affect the bulb out indicator but the lights work fine.

I only do short trips with my light trailer so I don't have a separate trans cooler.

my 87 240 and 92 740 wagon had drawtite hitches (that I installed), the 93 960 wagon had a factory hitch which used a rectangular metric drawbar (pain in $#@$#@). our S90 never got a hitch (I don't like towing with IRS, too many joints to wear out faster).

re trailer lights, you need an adapter that you wire to the cars tail light wiring, and provides the 4-pin interface to the trailer. volvos have seperate running lights, brake, and turn signals, while trailers have just parking/running and brake+turn bulbs. I've used this adapter multiple times with good results...

also, I highly recommend converting any trailers to sealed LED light assemblies, long run they are far less trouble.

appear to be a factory trailer hitch? Has Pierce used a trans cooler and where did you mount it? I remember the stench of burned brown fluid and clutches from another life.

My Volvos never towed anything over 1500 lbs or so, mostly light sailling skiffs and a hobie cat. so, no, I didn't have any additional tranny cooler beyond what was stock. if I had to tow something heavier, back then I had a E150 van with factory tow and now I have a F250 diesel 4x4, with factory tow...

and if thats missing the bolt hardware, I'd just get the drawtite. those are fine thread metric grade 8 bolts, I believe, that have to be torqued to like 120 ft-lbs or something. $90 + $62 shipping ain't a great deal.

odd its a 2" as class II hitches are 1.25" class III/IV hitches are 2". I think the /max/ tow for a 240/740 is 3500 lbs, and that requires careful control of the tongue weight (as close to 10% as practical, not 15%), beefing up your rear springs with airbags or whatever, and going slow. a stock 240 can pull 1000-1200 lbs fine, just stay out of 4th/OD on the highway unless its coasting downhill. if the tranny 'hunts' between gears, manually downshift to the lower gear until you're over the grade.

Flea bay for the tank. None of them knew a thing about the tanks they were selling, all are resellers. Was not going to get off of 400 euros for an alleged oem tank.
So went with the cheapest and TA da. I read that all of them are made by one stamping plant in Taiwan and just rebranded.
