HELP NEEDED---radio wiring
 

thought I would look for some help with this---I just bought a 740 and I am looking to hook up the radio that was in it. I think it is from a different model Volvo though. As I understand,my89 740 had 7 wires that went directly into the back of the head unit along with the amp plug to power the speakers--right??

Well the radio in the car has a plug that you can unplug and also has several more wires than mine plus the amp plug. I am assuming that the extra wires are for some extra speakers like tweeters? so I am disregarding them.

I was able to power the unit up and change radio stations and such. But there was hardly any volume. With the knob all the way up I could barely hear the speakers.

I know the antenna did not go up nor were the interior, glove box, or hood lightsworking. They are on the same fuse and the fuse is not blown.

What the heck is going on?? Could this be a relay? or is the amp not working? Iam determinedtowin this battle with the radio. Any help would be appreciated---thanks

Two radios were used in the '89 740 - Base and with amplifier.

The base radio had more wires coming out of it than that with the amp as all the speaker wires were coming from the radio.

If the wires are connected incorrectly then that can affect the volume, but I don't know how it would affect the lights you mention.

Wiring diagrams are attached for both radios. Hope this will help you to win your battle.

Thank you for the diagrams--very nice. My 89 740GLE has the amp and the wiring for it so this diagram is spot on.

BUT!! My head unit is not the correct one. It is not the base one either. It has the amp plug in the back and an anti- theft feature too. It has all the wires from the amp radio I am supposed to have plus two sets of thinner speaker wire--brn-brn/wh and red-red/gry. I also have an extraground and an extra Yel-wh for lights apparently. When I hooked up all the matching colored wires I got no power. The only way I can get power to the radio is by hooking up theacc power to the grm-red power antenna wire?? the radio will turn on but no sound?

I spent most of the day yesterday fiddling with it. I tried to bypass the amp with the extra speaker wires I have--NOPE. A few hours todayand then Iwill admit defeat and enjoy the silence.

Seems like my light problem is caused by the radio wiring since 3 wires are used for interior lights. I can live with the no tunes but I need lights

Since you know which wires are spaker, hots, grounds, ect.... Why don't you pick up a used aftermarket radio and put it in. If you can go through all of thst you can install a kenwood.Used any brand $25-$75 on craigs list or in pawn shops

I have lights and chimes---YES! but still no tunes---I can hear a very faint sound when volume is the whole way. Maybe the amp is burnt up? I would buy an aftermarket radio but I am a cheapo! If I decide to keep the car, I will at some point. Anyone want a 89 740GLE Wagon 16V 5 speed? its cheap---how rare is the 16v wagon 5spd? seems like an odd combo.

Me too. Have you tried spraying the volume control with an electronics cleaner? I did my Peugeot radio with some I acquired, not bought - the cheapest way, from a radio expert. It boosted the volume to newcondition.

If you can't acquire some Radioshack sells it.

If the volume knob is dirty, wouldn't I get that fuzzy crackling sound when trurning the knob? like a static noise? I get nothing at all until volume is maxed out--thanks

not neccesarly sometimes the grime in the knob blocks all sound.
