an idle motor, a hose clamp, half a clothespin.... you should see this

I'd been in the market for a 122 or a 544, but stumbled on a '90 240 wagon (my 4th 240). It was such a deal, I couldn't pass it up.

When I first looked at it, I noticed the strange arrangement on the intake hose to the idle motor. But the car ran like a clock, so I didn't sweat it. Sure enough, if you loosen the hose clamp, the idle increases, and drops when it's tightened. I obtained the correct hose and installed it, but that caused the idle to surge back and forth between high and very high. So there's another problem somewhere.

First of all, am I doing any damage driving it as is? Although it will primarily be an around-town car, it cruises at 80 with no problem, and doesn't seem unhappy.

I'm going to check the throttle position switch today, but if that isn't the problem, I'm thinking it's the idle motor. Is there any maintenance or repair to be done to it, or do I just need to buy another?

Clean the throttle body and Idle motor.
Check adjustment on the TPS/throttle plate.
Also make sure you have no vaccum leaks.
