interference or non-interference

Just wondering which category does the 2.1 liter sohc intercooled turbo engine fall under ? I've been hearing too many different things about this topic from different sources from my experiance I know the B230F is an interference engine but what about the engine in my classic 1984 244 Turbo? I just figured some body out there could answer this once and for all.

Same as the B230 engine. That should be the B21 engine. Non-Interferance engine.

Is there a listing somewhere of what model types (240, 740, 940) .. by year..have non-interference engines?

Thanks
Frank

RE: interference or non-interference

Here is the easiest way to remember on all the OHC engines.
All the Single overhead cam engines they are Non-interferance engines. All of the Double overhead cams are.

All the 240,740,940 with the SOHC are Non-interferiance The 16Valve is an Interferance engine.
All 850,960,S40,S/V/C 70's,S60,S80 XC90's are Interferance engines.

I hope this helps.

That makes it pretty simple to remember...Thanks.

Advise though, specifically on 740, 940, from the outside, without looking under the hood, i.e. the badge label,
if it says "intercooler" or "turbo" would that be a 16V, thus making it a interference engine.

I am trying to determine by looking at the outside of the vehicle if it is possible to identify this.

Thanks
Frank

No the 16Valve is pretty rare. Most of them would be Badged a 16Valve on the back.

They also have a very distinct noise that they make when reved.

It sounds like no other Volvo engine.

RE: interference or non-interference

thanks for the quick response, the reason I wondered about this issue was after reading the timing belt replacement procedure in the haynes manual for the volvo 240 series says that the B230F engine is an interference engine and my 84' 240 Turbo Intercooler with the B21FT engine was not!. Dont believe me go read it for yourselves. Im not surprised by this misprint in a reputable publishing however this just goes to show you that you cant go by the book all the time;)

RE: interference or non-interference

I know this post is over a year after the previous one but I have a dilemma with my much loved 1991 volvo 240 torslanda. It has the b200f 2 litre fuel injected engine. Within the last week it sadly has lay down on me. The timing belt lost some teeth after an emergency stop and the engine died. The first question that sprung to mymind was 'is it an interference or non-interference engine ?'
I got conflicting opinions depending on the source of the information. The most bizarre was from a main Volvo dealer who's service rep had never heard of the term interference / non-interference before - I kid you not!
Anyway - the concensus was that it was non-interference, so , armed with knowledge I set about changing the timing belt. The volvo fought all the way with some very difficult to shift nuts but, eventually, I got there and put the new belt on - all timing marks aligning perfectly, and reassembled the beast.
You can imagine my triumph quickly turned to despair when I put the key in the igntion and tried to start the engine. It made a lovely whirring sound as if the belt wasn't even on and I was just turning the starter. With a quick look under the bonnet I could see that everything was turning as it should when the ignition key was turned but not even a hint of an attempt to fire up.
I took out No.1 spark plug and put my finger over the hole and got someone to turn the engine - no compression was evident so I now assume that the valves have been damaged.
Can any of you volvo gurus out there throw any other ideas in here to tell me to look at something else. It looks like brick could be heading to the breakers yard otherwise. Which is a real pity becausebesides thisits a great workhorse and only has 135000 on the clock.

Recheck your timing marks. It sounds like your belt is off a couple of teeth of which is easy to do. This will cause you to have no compression and a free spinning engine like you're describing.

RE: interference or non-interference

Had another try at the timing today after being inspired by Jetech. Set the timing as per book and then moved it a tooth either side of the timing mark on the crankshaft (by turning the crankshaft only).
Unfortunately it caused no improvement and the engine is still free-spinning when the ignition is turned. I keep coming back to the thought that he B200F engine is interference and that the valves are stuffed.
Any one else out there in volvo land who can confirm my worst fears or maybe give me fresh hope (and enthusiasm) to try again!

Don,

I can second that. B200F is interference design. I have one and you can feel things go wrong when you hand turn the crankshaft without the timing belt installed.

The B200F still cranks out 110 HP! so they must have increased compression and valvelift hence causing interference. Reason of course is taxation. Smaller engine, less money.... Worked for me!

Reg,

looks gloomy from here if this is right, but it confirms my thoughts !!!

Volvo V70

Can anyone tell me if a 2000 V-70 Volvo is a interference or non interference engine?
Thank you!
