Looking to Upgrade 740 Turbo
Hey all,
I have a 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo that I'm trying to get a new turbo for. The only thing is I'm not entirely sure how to start. I picked out a turbo, but I just wanna know if it's POSSIBLE?

Thanks all,
Noah

I would get an identical turbo, new or rebuilt, unless you're trying to hop up the engine, in which case you'll need a higher flow fuel pump, bigger injectors, a new ECU, custom fuel mapping,. and a WHOLE lot of time to get it drivable and sorted out. your gas mileage will suffer, its already bad enough. and if you mess up while sortiing out the fuel maps, you can easily blow the motor.
in 1990, Volvo used either a Garrett T3 or a Mitsubishi turbo. I believe the Mitsubishi is a TD04 (earlier cars used a TD05) but not all TD04's will bolt in, the Volvo one was setup a specific way.

if you really do want to kick up your 740, wander over to turbobricks, its another forum dedicated to high performance modifications of 'swedish bricks'. they have some stickies on the basics of getting up to 250HP relatively easily, aboev that it starts getting real expensive, because things start breaking.
remember, more power == faster, and faster == more need for better handling and brakes to keep things under control.

another point, a 92+ has a larger radiator and intercooler. 94-05's have oil squirters on the piston skirts, all these things are important for high performance builds.
the turbo-bricks cookbook kinda starts with 'stage 0' where you get your engine up to its original optimal conditions, if you want power, you do not start with a tired high miler.
I drove a 1992 turbo wagon 740 for a bunch of years, lotsa stuff went wrong cuz of tired and age. I updated all the chassis bushings, this was $$$ and a ton of work, then the engine started having excess blowby on long grades, like climbing the Sierra heading east out of Sacramento, it would blow the dipstick right out and start spraying oil all over, and that engine was totally stock. at 250K and having had at least 2 head gasket jobs, it probably needed rings and valve guides, ugh. you fix that, and the tranny blows. you fix that, and the rear differential blows.
IMHO, get it running great in stock spec, and maintain it. 160 HP and 200 ft-lbs is plenty to move these wagons and sedans around faster than you need to go.
