Loud vibration noise under load

I have a 1995 940 B230F automatic. At 40, right before it shifts into the next gear, it makes this loud noise like a metal on metal vibration. It happens when I am going up an incline at 40 apparently when the engine is under load and at the top of its gear. When the noise is present I can feather the acclerator and make it go away and come back. I wonder if it is the exhaust system making contact with the car at some point? It sounds like something metallic vibrating. It's quite loud. Heat shields are fine.

Thoughts?

RE: Loud vibration noise under load

Are the engine and trans mounts good?
Is the driveshaft carrier bearing good?
