Lowered 940 Wagon

2 Attachment(s)
I know this is not the correct way to do this but I'm showing my 940 wagon at the Battle Drag show in Houston. We got home from the first day of the show and decided to chop the springs. After taking off what looked to be about half the front springs and a little less on the back it cake out pretty good looking. Barely covers the top of the tire and I can still turn the front wheels 100% with no rubbing. Obviously the car is extremely bouncy. Love the way it looks but hate the way it rides.
Before you say how bad this change is fir the car, the shocks abd struts and blown and I'm planning on replacing then and getting lowering springs. This is just for a low, level look for this show. It's a truck show mainly with bagged trucks but I heard they have a worst in show.
The purpose of this thread is just to show how low it is and that it doesn't sacrifice any steering radius.
I don't recommend heating or cutting springs on any vehicle and it could be dangerous and damaging to the vehicle. I always said I'd never cut springs but it was just so easy for a big change in look temporarily.

Not a look I'd choose, but that's just me... That's what the Forum is for--to solve all kinds of problems, before and after.

you wanna make that car look 10X better, get new headlights and turn signals... the Depo brand of knock-offs, sold on ebay, fit pretty darn well, and look stock.

BigSlim 10-13-2013 06:39 PM

Yeah I've been debating dropping the money for new lights since the passenger melted a little, but they both work and provide enough light for now. From all the searching I've been doing, I can only find oem style light fir around $150 for each light. Might buff and clear coat them for now.

pierce 10-13-2013 09:21 PM

mmm, they've gone up. $200 now for both sides from Depo.

these are chinese replica lights, but I've used them on several cars, and they are close enough to equally good to the hella or cibie originals as what doesn't matter.

Thanks for the link. I'm sure at least one of mine is too far gone to be buffed clear so I'll shop some salvage yards for better condition lights to buff since that's free for me. Worst case I'll have to spend some money on these. But also fir the show look of the car I want it to look a little dated and weathered. Thanks again.

every headlight I've buffed has gone cloudy in a year of being parked outside. new ones seem to last 5-10 years.

my wife commutes over a mountain highway, often coming home late at night (tech job). she needs good clear headlights. when they are cloudy, it diffuses the light.

Yep, that's the trick to our remedy for foggy lights at our body shop. Just buffing removes the build up temporarily (we usually see it last 1-3 months). We completely sand the surface to bring back the clear layer then spray it with a high quality clear coat. Now it is looking brand new and is protected from UV rays. The lights will now stay clear longer than most factory paint clear coats.

new lights all the way around makes a old car look much spiffier.

I need to do something about the bumpers on my 740 wagon, they are all grey, and no amount of bumper stuff I've put on them has done anything. Thinking they need to come off and be painted black with plastic bumper paint.

heh, is that front left a Nova wheel, and the other three are Aries? that adds some class :D

Good eye lol, yes it has both those wheels. But on the other side is a third type of wheel. The center area is larger so the spokes are very short and rounded, also an oe Volvo wheel. Someone must have gotten what they could from a junk yard. The paint makes them look a little more uniform from a distance, but I will be purchasing a set of custom "steel" wheels eventually when I find all the info I need to order them. They need all the measurements for center bite, backspacing, brake size etc. I plan on keeping a narrow 15" wheel in front to aid in turning if I bag the car, and a wider 15" in the rear, maybe 9-10" for an aggressive look, pretty much as wide as I can fit while still letting the rocker panel drop to the ground.
I've also been looking for some body modifications like an aftermarket front bumper, or hood and can't find anything. Is there some source for these parts hiding somewhere or are they just not available? I was hoping to find an 840R style front and some type of fiberglass spoiler, nothing too crazy. Worst case I was planning on building an almost prerunner style front and rear bumper, but side skirts would be nice also to cut a spot for my side exit exhaust to look a little less tacked on. Thanks for any helpful info.

Here's a better shot as it sits now. I really like the look of the tires being just slightly tucked with such a long square body. It's also nice to still be able to make a full turn with no rubbing, I'm still extremely impressed and surprised by such a small turn radius from what looks to be a huge boat.
And the wheels of like to get are similar to the police Tahoe black steel wheels, STL8074 I believe, but in a deep dish 15" without a center cover.https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi..._user=34409972

haven't seen any body kits for these cars for 20 years. even back then, they were a euro special order kinda thing.

i still like the looks of the 5 spoke 16" Hydra wheels on a 7/9 wagon...

the stock wheels on 240/740/940 are +20 or +25mm offset (ET20 or ET25), 5x108 bolt pattern.

I'm not really even looking for a body out. Just something to update it a little, plus my bumper has an issue staying up on one side. Are the front ends on the 800s the same size as the 900? I was looking at the 840 and it looks like it has the same overall size and shape, like being flat all the way across under the lights and grille. If that bumper would fit the 940 even if it needed a little custom fitting to mount to the vehicle I'd be happy.

pierce 10-14-2013 03:03 AM

I don't think the 850 bumper covers and stuff would fit a 7/9 without a lot of modification. the cars look superficially similar.

the s90/v90 stuff is a lot closer, but even so, they changed the rear bumper and fenders a fair amount.

painting a 7/9's bumpers high gloss body color does quite a lot to making the car look a little more modern. or painting them black.

BigSlim 10-14-2013 03:19 AM

There is a trim paint by either ppg or sem I think that will make those unpainted bumper pieces look brand new. We used it on an old rolls Royce rear bumper and it turned out perfect. And I think it's even just called black trim paint.
I'll probably end up taking some measurement and checking out all the local junk yards to find any bumper that would be close. The body shop I manage does a lot of custom fitting and fiberglass work so as long as it's not cutting up the whole thing I'm not worried about it.

Pierce, a quick tip for the bumper: often people report that no amount of cleaning products will make the bumper completely black again. However, if you use a heat gun, you can restore the bumper to a dark black.

I am looking for a similar solution for the bumpers on mine too, I am not familiar with bumper paint. What is your experience with it?

brilliant!

Any idea how long the treatment lasts? Will applying a bumper treatment afterward prolong the result?
