Need Help Buying 87' Volvo 240
 

My First Post!

So my cousins neighbors want to sell there 1987 Volvo 240 with the 5 Speed Transmission after getting it for free from someone in 06-07. He told me it has about 200k on it, but when I looked at it, I saw 86k. Maybe I'm wrong. It sat in front of his house since 06-07 because they didn't know what was wrong with the transmission.

Recently they replaced the Pressure Plate and the Clutch. When they took the Tranny out they saw it was low on Fluid since the seal was leaking. I don't remember the other part, but it needs a new 5 Speed Tranmission since he stripped the gears. So it isn't driveable. He wants $300 for it. Everything pretty much works except for the Tranny. It has Heated Seats, Power Locks, CD Player and a lot of new front end suspension work. It also has a New Alternator and a new A/C Compressor. He said he got it installed, but never recharged it and said it will work after that. They body looks great, but I want to look underneathe for rust and etc.

I know it's hard to find a 5 Speed Tranmission for an 87'. Should I buy it and find a tranny for it? Or don't waste my money and save it.

What else should I look for and what is the correct thing I should do. Monday I'm going to start calling Junk Yards to see if any can find this transmission.

I go to my cousins house (which is two hours away) almost every other week so I might decide to go this weekend and check it out or most likely next weekend. If I do it will need a new battery and some gas I bet.

Unless you can install the transmission yourself, it's going to cost at least $1,000 to have somebody do it professionally. There will inevitably be other costs, some of which you know about and others you'll be surprised by.

Check the tires closely. That's $500 if they need to be replaced.

I'd say that you need to ask yourself whether the car is worth $2,000 to you. If "no" don't get it. If "yes" it might be worth the risk.

Broken odometer, the 200k is an estimate. The manuals are not that rare, especially the older they are. I at least see a fair share of both. I would pass, unless you can get him to $200 or less, and have a parts 240 sitting around to save some trips to the yard.
Poor transmission service may indicate poor overall care.

I'll post up some pictures if I end up going this weekend.

If I end up buying it, and not end up doing anything to it I could probably sell it on eBay. I'm going to check up everything and see how it is.

I want to fix it. I have to find a tranny first. What year tranny's will fit into this Model and year?

1987 was the first year for the 5 speed M47 transmission. It was the only manual transmission used in 240's from 87 to 93. It was also used in non turbo 740's from about the same time frame.

So from any 87-93 240 will bolt on with no problem right without any modifications?

Yup...the later the better. At some point they came out w/ a MkII model w/ an improved tail shaft. They're all interchangeable though.

Dude I'd jump on it. Oh, and most yards won't tell you what they have over the phone, just gotta go down, pay your two bucks and look for yourself. That is gonna be a difficult find, IMO. But, having said that, I do wish you luck!

eBay? In the condition it is in? I don't think so...

What are you going to check? Are you going to look everything over, or just a quick fluids check. It's the least you should do seeing they neglected one fluid problem...

Any 87-93 should work!

M47's are not that scarce at all. Frankly, if I was tackling this as a project, I'd go out and buy a wrecked parts car for a couple hundred and swap stuff over. You'll end up spending that and more at a jy on individual parts.

Woah, love it when I go to reply and someone else beats me to it during posting. Please do post some pictures, those sell everything. Thinking about it now, you could part the car out on eBay, but I would seriously try to get him down to $200, heck even $300 is okay to park it and part it for yourself, you're going to need it. Unless the body is in great shape, then try to get it running.
