New and Confused/Broken and Sad

Hello Everyone.

I am new to this site, and car maintenance in general, but not particulary to Volvos. I'm 23 and have had my 1988 Volvo 240 DL since I bought it for 800$ in high school.
Unfortunately, nobody in my family knew anything about cars, and thus I think I've gotten ripped off a lot in the car-repair area.

I'm here because I love my car and its very broken and has been for the past couple months. She has aroudn 180,000 miles on her ( odometer stopped working a month or two before car stopped).

Mechanics tell me that the cause of my non-startage is that I need a new

IDLE SPEED MOTOR OR IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE

and a new starter (which i've been hitting on and off for a while now make start every so often, nothing to bad)

My question is really, do these repairs seem worth it? The total cost of reapair (In boston, at good volvo repair place) is $719.00 for part and 294$ for labor.
Opinions on if I should do it? I really love my car, and have already fixed a far amount of things on her.

any help or comments are all are much appreciated!! Thanks!!

Depends on how much you love your Volvo.

trust me, if you treat your volvo right then it will go on forever.

$719 for an IAC and starter? That sounds way too high

No, that's too much for both the parts and for labor.

If you're going to run an old car like this you either have to know a good and honest independent mechanic or you have to become a mechanic yourself.

Replacing a starter is one of the easier repairs to do on a vehicle.

You're a girl, right? Are there no men in your family?
