Firstly Hi to all you 740 owners.

I'm hoping you folks can help my father who is the proud 2nd ownerof a 'pristine'white 2.0lt 1986 volvo740GL. For the first havingowned and self maintained his car since 1990, he has come up against a 'brick wall' as towhat could be the cause of the engine failing to tick over.

Car starts fine, runs while foot is kept on throttle, once released the engine cuts out.To keep the engine ticking overthe revs have to be kept around 1500.
He's checked and cleaned the jets in the caburettor, check compressions in each cylinder (150lbs), replaced a number of vacuum hoses which appeared to be slightly perrished.

Would really value your thoughts and advice on a solution.

Engine off, turn the throttle by hand, can you hear the throttle switch click just as the throttle opens, again just as it closes?

Pull the bellow off, is the throttle body clean at the butterfly, there should be a slight space at the bottom when throttle is closed, a feeler guage is used to set the gap.
If it closes too far or the throttle position switch is set wrong (doesn't click when throttle closes) you have these symptoms, so I'd start there.

Engine off, ignition on (II) position at key, put your hand on the idle motor, can you feel it hum?
You might want to remove and clean it out with carb cleaner anyway, I found it easier to check when holding it in my hand and plugging it in, you should be able to feel a smooth hum.

As a matter of interest, last night prior to your replyi also did a search on the forum for idle related issues and a guy with an '89 740had what would appear to be the same symptoms as described and it turned out to be a failed fuel tankpump. Could this also be a issue to investigate? as i can't quiet understand if it was this fuel pump (as i beleive there are two) which is the cause ofthe problem, how it is that fuel is still pumped when the revs are kept above 1000 and not when left to idle.
