sounds sort of like a playing card on a bike wheel. first sound when started reversing to go to the store,was like mud being flung against the rear,then the "card on bike wheel " started. increasing with speed.
i looked under the car,looked in the car,made sure no seat belts were hanging out because that was another sound. didnt see anything.

any ideas as to what it could be? she is an 87 volvo station wagon 240 dl. im afraid to drive her until i have some ideal as to what is going on.

 

After driving, did you notice any smell coming from the rear brakes? I had a similar thing happen to me. The problem was that the brake material separated from the parking brake shoe. It was floating around in there and was rubbing against the drum.

When it happened to me, I got out to check out the noise and noticed a burning smell and a lot of brake dust on the rear wheel.

To check it out you need to remove the rear disc. Not too hard.

no no smell, but daughter suggested that i might have something rolling in wheel, tried to look couldnt see anything. thanks for helping.

 

You should take off the wheel and look around, make sure the pads and caliper and the parking shoes are all ok... the problem should reveal itself.

 

found out yesterday what it was, the tire had de-treaded itself. and only by backing up would you ever figure out what happened. it looked like black toilet paper coming over the top of the wheel.
getting new tire today.

 

What kind of tire was it?

to tell you the truth i dont know just replaced it,had them check to see if left tire was okay since it was bought at same time, about 5 or 6 years ago.didnt give any trouble.
