New owner of a'90 240 ?s

I just bought a '90 240 DL with manual tranmission. I'm new to Volvos so have some initial questions.

When the gas gauge reads about 1/4 empty, the car runs out of gas. I'm assuming this may be a problem with the sending unit? Must the tank be dropped to access the sending unit?

I want to change the timing belt. Is there a kit one can purchase that comes with the belt, tensioner, etc?

What's the best repair manual for the 240, and where can I purchase one?

What's a good parts source for these? I can buy much of the parts at Autozone, but I'm hesitant about the quality of some parts such as the timing belt.

Thanks!

welcome to the world of 240.
1) Yes the sending unit becomes corroded and needs replacement. change the intank fuel pump at while doing the job. Be sure to get the "O" ring. No, you don't have to drop the tank. There is an access panel under the floor in the cargo area.
2) Yes you can get a kit for the timing belt.
3) The Hanes manual is adequate.
4) In Canada try autopartsway. In the US try IPD. IPD is Volvo dedicated and have cleaver ideas and usually supply all you need for a given job.

ah, there are two fuel pumps on these cars, one in the gas tank, and the main fuel pump under the car. the symptoms of 1/4 tank indicate a problem with the tank pump or the fuel pickup tube/screen attached to it.

re: getting parts, I get most Volvo parts from TascaParts.com which is a real volvo dealer that sells real parts at way below list. aftermarket stuff like suspension upgrades, I get from IPD USA or FCPEuro. Whenever possible I use real volvo stuff, as its just more durable and better quality than most generic replacement parts. this is especially important for things like seals, aftermarket seals like camshaft, etc, tend to be poor quality.

The Bently manual is the best.
