New Problem with 740
 

My 89 740 GL, just recently (As in yesterday) started experiencing a new problem. Sometimes (though not all the time), after i come to a complete stop, either for a red light, or a stop sign (though not necessarily complete), as i start to accelerate again, the car seem to only be getting gas in short spurts, as i step on the gas it will accelerate in bursts instead of smoothly. (not sure if i should define this as sputtering or not. I can't hear any noise coming from the car when this happens). It seems that once it gets out of first gear (it's an automatic, but i can still feel the gear changes) it stops. This happens the most when i'm on a hill, or when i'm not hitting the gas or the brake (the gear that moves your car just a little forward. i think it's called the frontal planetary gear, but i could be wrong). Twice however, it did this, and then the car turned off completely. Both times, it started right up again with no problems, but i'm still worried, for good reason. I thought it could be a transmission problem, because it happens when the car is in first gear, but then i read a couple posts, and it seems that it could also be the fuel injection line. (Gas is at 1/4 tank. It hasn't happened previously though). Perhaps it just needs some 91 octane gas? Any ideas?

Edit: This only seems to be happening after it warms up. When the engine is cold, it's fine.

in your car you have two fuel pumps, the pump in your tank has a tendens to quit working, and when you have 1\4 full tank, it gets to heavy for the main pump below the car to push enough gas. are you running on 91 oktan? then i belive that your enegine is working slow! always fill at least 95, or 98. i rekomend 98.

It could be alot of things. If you only notice it after the engine has warmed up I would suspect the hall pickup sensor in the distributor if you have one or the speed sensor on the bellhousing behind the cyl head if you dont. Could also be radio supression relay (supplies 12 to the injectors) or the fuel pump relay, or ign control module on the drivers front fender. Or bad fuel pump or bad in tank prepump. Prepump usually rears its head when tank is less than 1/2 full.

try your air mass sensor or you may be in need of a major tune up. new plugs, adjust timing, check cap and rotor and wires. sounds like this may what you need. how long has it been since your last major tune? also have the throttle body cleaned out properly. -SEATTLEVOLVOGUY

hi everyone

i'm also experiencing this bucking problem. it appears when engine is warm, and when changing from 1st gear to 2nd gear.

friend suggest a sticky clutch but i think it is a fuel problem as it happens when you push on the accelerator.

tank is about 1/4 full.

how to get to the pump in the tank and where exactly is the main fuel pump?

just got myself a '86 740gl station wagon yesterday. it has 295000km on the clock. engine has about 25000km. no rust!
my better part wanted a 4-door with plenty of loading space. of course for shopping!
so i got a volvo.

There is a access hole in the trunk to get to the intank pump.

The Main pump is under the car on the left side like just infront of the rear wheel. Next to the fuel filter.

i found the access hole.

did all the 740 series volvos have this prepump in the tank?

my car is with fuel injection.

would you have the volvo part # for the prepump?

btw, i think my fuel filter is in the engine bay near the driver's side firewall

Man where is that car from?

It looks like a really Old Setup.

The 1989 here in the U.S. have a totally different setup in them.

What are the engine specs of the sticker under the hood?

Will need them to look the Pump up.

i filled up the gas tank and everything went back to normal. no more bucking.

i looked under the car for the fuel pump and it was there just behind/below rear passenger seat. there is another cylindrical piece next to the pump. fuel pressure regulator? fuel filter?
don't know. i'll have to take the holder apart to see exactly what's there.

i'm in europe and this is my first volvo ever.

The Part # should be either 3507436 or 3517845.
