odometer broken

My odometer has stopped working. I could have the odometer/speedometer replaced for around $500 at the shop, but I'm hoping someone here could recommend how to troubleshoot a dead odometer. My car's probably not even worth the price of a new odometer/speedometer.

Other info . . . The speedometer still works fine. Also, my odometer stopped working after I took it to Jiffy Lube to have the oil changed. Perhaps it's coincidental that it stopped working the very mile that I pulled into Jiffy Lube, but I was suspicious when I saw that it was not working when I drove away.

ive heard a lot of people with the problem. For a car under 500 bucks, who needs an odometer ;)

Probably out of luck without replacing the speedo head. There's a plastic drive gear off of the speedometer drive motor/magnet assembly that splits in half. That gear is available to people who repair speedo heads.

Maybe call Fort Lauderdale Speedometer Service and try to get the gear separately. That's the service we use, and the gear can't be more than 2 bucks. They charge us $85.00 to fix a 240 speedo, and you get it back in a week.

Try checking the speed sensor located underneath the trunk - failure of the odometer/speedometer could be due to dirty speed sensor and/or damaged wiring that connects the sensor to the odometer. A auto-electrician would be capable to rectify this.

This seems to be a common problem. It happened to my 1991 Volvo just recently. After hearing the dealer tell me it would be $750! to replace the whole odometer/speedometer unit I did some internet research & found a website that for a few hours of sweat equity & $29 this problem can be fixed - they even have pictures on what to do. Try http://grove.ufl.edu/~smack118/volvoodometer.htm

Good luck - I even printed out the page for my way over priced dealer!

RE: odometer broken

My 90' 240 was having the same problem and it turned out that a 25 tooth gear was stripped and I got a new one from Jeff Caplan in VA. His number is (757) 593-3478. The gear costs around $29 including shipping. It is a new gear rather than a dryrotted one from a used car. Go to this site for directions on how to fix this.

I hope it works for you. It is pretty easy to do and took me only 20 min to fix once I had the gear.

Let me know how it goes.

Chris
