Please Help Me- Flame trap seal nightmare
 
1994 volvo 940 turbo. So i removed the air oil separator to check and clean on a customers car. i was going to replace the rock hard o-ring on the seperator intake whwere it mounts to the block and also replace what i thought was an oring that was stuck to the block where the sepaerator oil return goes. i know realize that this is some sort of hose that goes to the oil sump? it is broken in pieces that won't come out. how do i fix this? do i need to take the oil pan off? does that hose really need to feed back into the sump. I dont have an engine lift so it looks like im f*****. Any advice?

Those of greater knowledge should be along shortly to assist - but from my recent schooling on the crankcase ventilation, you may have a headache coming on. Sounds like the oil return hose is broken - replacement is from "down under".

thanks for the diagrams. i drained the oil and then poured two quarts through the hole that the drain used to be in to flush out any plastic bits. i cant see any major harm in just leaving it the way it is. i doubt that much oil collected in the drain chamber anyway. if the drain tube isn't there it appears that it is now fuctioning like the hole next to it, where the crankcase vapors rise into the separator and into the manifold. i drove the car around and it ran great.

as an aside i checked all the hoses from the separator, they arent clogged, neither is the separator but i still have what seems to be a lot of crankcase pressure. is the only other likely possibilty the piston rings? the compression is 150,150,170,180.

Seems to me that there will be pressure on both sides of the oil separator without an intact tube protruding into the oil in the crankcase. The tube side is the return side and without the tube, both sides of the oil separator are getting positive crankcase vapor pressure.

My Haynes manual says compression for the 240 series is 170 standard and 128 minimum.

Sounds like it will run as is but as a customer, I would appreciate the disclosure. Give them the option to pay you to dig deeper to fix it properly. That way if something blows in 2 weeks they won't be after your head.

The public needs to understand that old cars have brittle parts that break when you sneeze at them. When they do break, I think they should know about it.

Kind of like getting in someone's car and closing the door, and when you do, the handle comes off in your hand.
