a question about mileage reset
 

Hi everyone, this forum is great and I appreciate all of the information I have found here in the last month or so. Today I finally registered because I need to ask a question about the 240's odometer repair. I'm around 200k with 193k reading on the frozen odometer. I have the information I should need to complete the fix and just ordered a replacement gear.


I've been bouncing from forum to forum getting tidbits about future repairs and could swear I ran across a post last week explaining how to get the accurate mileage to input into my repaired odometer using the ODB unit on the driver side front strut. I just spent about an hour searching this forum, a couple others, my bookmarks, and PDFs to find that info, but I can't. Either I was up too late reading and halucinated this idea or I just can't find it again.



Thanks for reading and thanks for all the advice I've already been using. My friend bought this baby as a $500 dollar beater and I've gone all over it showing it love and making awesome again. FYI--If the fuel filter has never been changed on one of these be prepared to disconnect @ fuel pump to take it to the bench. I had to cut the filter off from the inner nut and use a vice and breaker bar to get the bolt out. I made this process a lot harder for myself by extending the under car battle before stepping back and realizing that my temper was affecting my judgement.

Sorry, but the OBD found on 240's records no mileage info. That didn't really come into play until OBDII came out in 1996. So...since most states list 100,000+ cars as exempt from mileage requirements on titles, just use your best judgement. While swapping in the odo gear, you can reset the odo to read whatever you like.

Actually, cars 10 model years and older are EXEMPT from Federal mileage reporting requirements--the mileage is irrelevant.

From a legal perspective this is true but I suspect some folks want a semi-accurate reflection of the true miles on the chassis at least. Perhaps if it was a one or two owner car where the po knew the history (such as a family car since new), the odometer reading would hold some value. The truth is, as old as the newest of these cars are, the odometer is a true crap shoot as to accuracy. Even when one runs a Car-fax to check for odometer errors there are problems and often the car is older than the span of the report. Too, there will often be years where no information is provided. Frankly, I pay little attention to odometers when considering the purchase of a Volvo other than to make a mental note as to whether the wear and tear seem commiserate with the mileage displayed.

Thanks for the replies, I figured I had gotten confused. This is the oldest car I have personally worked on and I am constantly amazed how much it just doesn't seem like a 20 year old car. We already registered the title disclosing odometer discrepancy, so it's me being OCD. I was just wondering if it was possible as I tend to geek out on details.

--here's a couple questions I thought of in case anyone has suggestions.

In 2 days the replacement flame trap kit arrives and after install I will give this baby it's blessing to travel on a thousand mile trip. I was wondering, would It be a good idea to funnel some heated motor oil through the seperator box to clean the passages back to the pan at the next oil change? I'm mainly wondering because when I found it the flame trap had no filter and the downtube was cracked and partially off.

Since meeting it I've repeatedly flusshed the brown tranny fluid, put synthetic oil in her, changed the diff. lube, changed the fuel filter, hardwired the frustrating taillights (good option), sea-foamed the intake (wow, that was a cloud), cleaned the MAF replaced all ignition components, fixed the hood release, bled the brakes and inspected all components, and a bunch of cosmetic stuff. Any recommendations on maintenance tasks I may have missed? I've taken the attitude that after 20 years everything I can get to needs to be inspected and evaluated. It's been awesome finding them getting parted out all over the place on Craigslist.

The previous owner replaced some of the suspension components, however I think the suspension will be my area of focus. I know that the front struts are at least partially blown. Any trouble spots or common problems I should be aware of when I'm underneath her with a prybar going from corner to corner?

I just started reading about swapping a manual ford motorsport tranny in there to improve gas mileage and increase joy!, I think this is the first time I've realized I wouldn't mind in the auto tranny failed in a car, of course this is the first time in my life where I've felt I could swap out a tranny! :) The 240 is a tank and I am falling in love with it.
