Hey, I can't find a wiring harness in Fort Wayne. Anyone know where I can find a diagram of the wires for the stereo to help me in replacing my factory system??????

It's a 1991 740 sedan. I got mostly everything hooked up now. Didn't realize it had a amp. Just deciding how I want to run wiring to the rear now. The wires were pretty easy to figure out once I looked at it a little deeper. Thanks for the reply, though.

Default Radio installation 1991 volvo 240

I have a 1991 Volvo 240 and I am trying to put in a after market radio. The radio is in the upper console. It is a DEH 2200 Pioneer. I have the wire harness but there are two. Both fit in the car harness but only one at a time. Meaning I can only use one. It is a 14 pin harness but only 7 wires attached on the new harness. The pins on the original car harness have 4 on one row and 3 on the bottom. The harness that came in the mail are different but some wires match up. I located 4 ground and 2 hot or 12v current on the orginal wire, one did not register. I have more wires on the new radio than I do the old radio. Can not match speaker wires. Any idea how to hook this new radio up. I can take pictures and send if need be.

Thanks
Afflofh

Smile Radio Installation 240 91' wiring

The upper dash section plug will connect negative (Black), 12V ign.switched (Red), 12V constant (Yellow), front left (White) and front right (Gray) channels. The other plug will be used to bypass the rear speakers amp located behing the storage pocket in the lower dash section (under the ashtray). There you will only connect the rear speaker wires from your aftermarket stereo (Green and Violet) to the new plug (You will probably need to add additional wires to route them from the top of the dash all the way to the bottom were the amp is hidden. This is not necessary if you're using a Metra harness/plug kit. I can provide you with some pictures from my 92' 245 wagon if you're interested.

Very interested in pictures. Today is my anniversary and I was trying to surprise my wife. I get that will not happen. Thanks for the help and I await the pictures. In the original radio there was another plug, round in nature and black. Is that for the amp?

Cool

The plug is for an amp or optional equalizer in the factory radio.

I'm also struggling to replace/upgrade my '84 240 radio, due to lack of wiring knowledge.

Can I simply follow the advise you've provided already in this post by Sportsdruid, or do I need something else?

Thanks.

If I choose to power the new rear speakers from the new head unit and bypass the factory amp, do I risk anything by leaving it in and wired? Or should I strip the amp out?

if you've unplugged the cable from the original factory stereo that ran to the amp, the amp will stay turned off.

the kit I just used to wire my 940SE had two harnesses. one plugged into the plug that originally fit into the back of the factory stereo, and the other, with longer wires, had to be plugged into the plug that fit into the factory amp which was near the steering column above the driver's footwell and behind the knee brace, this one connected all 4 speakers on this car. using these two harness plugs, which I got from my local car stereo emporium quite inexpensively (yay Lott's!)

even a $100 modern pioneer/kenwood/whatever has like 22w continuous x 4 channels now, '50 watt music power', this is plenty to run most non-outrageous speaker systems at most any reasonable volume level. the more expensive in-dash decks just have more bells and whistles, they all have about the same amp chip in them. these new car stereos have far more useful power and sound quality than even a high end deck did 5 or 10 years ago.

nemesis: please start your own thread, and a 850 doesn't even belong in the 240/740/940 forum.

that said, any decent car stereo place should have the harness connector(s) to plug into the factory wiring, these harnesses come with the color codes you need to connect that harness to the harness for your aftermarket stereo. If your car has a seperate amplifier (pretty common on the upscale versions with the better factory stereos), there likely will be two harness connectors, one plugs into the cable that went to the original stereo, and the other plugs into the plug that goes to the stock amp which may well be somewhere under the dash, like to the left of the steering column (thats where it is on many 740/940 anyways). when you hook it up this way you're bypassing that factory amp as your new stereo likely has a better amp anyways.

Pierce is right again, as usual.

And often times, those connectors we speak of and install kits can be had at your local wal mart, for pennies on the dollar to what you'd pay at a stereo specialty shop. Cheers!

the adapters for my son's 91 940SE (basically a 960 wagon but with a b230ft turbo), were like $20 at the locally owned car stereo place when I was buying a $120 stereo for him. their guy double checked the stereo connectors in the car before selling them to me, and they had the right one in stock. Yeah, I probably could have gotten the right stuff somewhere else for a little bit cheaper... if I was lucky. lets just say I had no clue there was an amp above the driver footwell to the left of the steering column, and the guy at Lott's did. and he was right, when I got home and popped the panel, there it was, and his harness plugged in its place.

Default 2004 Volvo V70R

Hi, I'm hoping that this forum is still working and that someone could help me out... I'm installing a nice double din stereo, it's compatible with steering wheel controls but all the harness adapters I bought don't allow a plug and play to connect my controls to the stereo. Does anyone know what wires on the harness I need to tap into to control the deck? Please help ASAP as I am in the dash now. Thank you in advance for your time and help!
