Default 87 740 GLE auto trans. Yellowish fluid. Possible fuel tank location.

What you see is a close up on the exact area the leak is coming from. It is the center section of some sort of plate or tank between the rear wheels. I'm concerned this may be my fuel tank. With that said, no "fuel odor" was detected. it wasn't the consistency of an oil, nor did it leave a greasy film on my hands.

I will try to provide more pictures tomorrow, as I will attempt to bring the rear end on ramps to further inspect it. I realize the picture may not help much, but as I said, this is the middle of 3 spaced out sections that look like maybe grommets. The leak was coming out of a small tube attached to a joint. I pushed/angled this tube back up into the overall unit, and it seemed to stop the leak temporarily.

I would appreciate any experienced eyes that could tell me exactly what I'm lookign at.

that picture is way too out of focus to tell, but the only tank back there is your fuel tank.

wait. if its BEHIND the rear axle, its the trunk or spare tire compartment (on a wagon)

you can just barely make out the gas tank in FRONT of the axle in that picture. the big obvious thing behind the rear axle is the spare tire compartment under the rear deck of my wagon.

Pierce,

Yes, upon further investigation, it seems to be the spare tire compartment/trunk. Pardon my delayed response here( took a nap) but with a refreshed mind free of my initial panic, the section you've shown was exactly the thing that was draining.

I put my car on ramps earlier, after my initial post. I was still concerned with the amount of drainage, but was relieved to see the actual fuel tank under the driver side passenger door.

so whatever was draining was spillage in your trunk. eeew. might be a good idea to clean that all out before it stinks

Yep. When the sun comes up, I need to definitely go clean my trunk and figure what's caused the sudden drainage. Was my tire compartment plugged until recently? If so, how much was in there.. However, it's certainly a much lighter mood when it's not fuel I'm working with!
