Default Replacement Gas Tank for 1986 Volvo 240 DL

Hey all -

I just got the news from my mechanic that the tank needs to be replaced on my 1986 240 DL. He can't find the part and suggests I get a new one, if possible. Does anyone sell these? I have looked and not been able to find it.

He's said that replacing it with an old one could be a problem and fixing the current one will cost a few hundred dollars between removal, repairs, etc.

Obviously, this isn't really a problem I can live with - I'm losing a lot of gas out a few spots about 3/4 up to the top of the tank.

Also - how hard is this to replace? I have never done anything like this, but could it be done by an amateur? Somehow, I think the gas tank is one I don't want to mess with.

Thanks!

Well, if you aren't comfortable doing it...don't. Pulling a tank from a junkyard is a crap shoot. Basically, you can use any tank from 79 to 93. JY tanks are an unknown as far as rust. New tanks average around $250 plus shipping. They are large so it's extra for over-sized package. If your mechanic can't find the part I have to say that's pretty sad actually. Google "Volvo 240 gas tank" and you'll see what I mean. If you pay to have the swap done, it would seem prudent to use a new one. Here's about as cheap as it gets...and free shipping!
