replacing a manifold stud: do I dare try it myself?

Just took my '90 wagon to a muffler shop. They said I've got a rusted/broken manifold stud, and that it needed to be replaced by an automotive machine shop. I assume they mean that it needs to be drilled out, tapped and have Helicoil put in? Is it that tough of a job?

I plan to drive this car for a while. Is there a better grade of stud, such as stainless, that I should use?

I would have someone that really knows what they are doing replace it.

i would deff. have a shop do it...but!! if at all possible avoid heilicoils on manifolds because they never hold (for me) lol, if there is material have them use a slightly larger stud that is rated for high heat and stress.

There is a guy around here (San Francisco Bay Area) that works out of his truck, he will come to your shop, or maybe even your house, drill it out, and replace it in no time, without all the time and labor a shop may try to charge you.

I have seen him remove broken studs and broken taps.

Maybe there is someone in your area that provides the same service. It's worth looking into.
