Rounded out Brake Caliper Line
 

Good Afternoon all,

I have an 83 244GL. I'm in the process of swapping out both front frozen brake calipers. Well, I've managed to round out the driver side front lower caliper line nut. Even worse, I've managed to round out where the line connects to the hose too but have managed to loosen where the hose connects to another line. So my question is how can i remove the caliper, line that connects to it, and that hose that connects to those 2?

Any place I can go besides the dealership to buy the line and hose?

were you using flare wrenches on those flare nuts ? that and lots and lots of kroil or pb blaster.

my parts book says...

left front upper brake pipe is 1229858
left front lower brake pipe is 1229857
right front upper pipe is 1229859
right front lower pipe is 1229860

these fit *all* 240's.

If you are going to replace the calipers and you have destroyed the nuts then just cut the brake lines .

Visegrips may work if there is space but sounds like you can cut them since they are ruined anyway. Using the right tools is imperative even though with age and rust sometimes even then it's impossible not to destroy nuts and bolts...

Nuts and bolts are the easy part compared to 40 year old brake lines.

unfortunately no. tried to rush and ended up paying the price. i ended up getting a set only thereafter. but thanks for the links.

i've already loosened the rubber hose to the metal line i think goes to the master cylinder.

agreed. i replaced the rear calipers and was able to loosen all the other 3 nuts on the caliper. it was just that lower one on the driver side. it was partially operator error too. i went out there at about 30F with only pb blaster and regular wrench. in any case, it's only a waiting game with a lesson learned at this point.

yeah, you always want to use a flare wrench on any sort of hose fitting... its like a 6-sided box with one side cut out so you can slip it over the hose, and it grabs the nut by 5 flats, instead of two like an open end wrench...

Can't be said enough for using the optimal tool for any job, especially for the shady tree mechanic... A stripped/broken nut or bolt can make a normally easy and routine job into a costly nightmare.

thanks everyone for all your help, i was finally able to get fix...felt more like a rebuild of the system. replaced calipers all the way around, bled the system including the master cylinder and now she's well on her way. thanks again
