Default Severe vibration when stoping at a light. 94 940

1994 940 non turbo auto

The car runs great, but when you have to stop at a light or a stop sign the car vibrates
pretty severely. If you’re behind the car, you can see the tailpipe going up and down and the steering wheel vibrates pretty badly. I don’t know much about cars, but I’ve had three mechanics look at it. Two of them were Volvo mechanics. Nobody could figure out what’s going on. Any ideas?

Funny a mechanic can't at least check the brake pads and the rotors and then the tie rods and tie rod ends. If it were tire/wheels you would get the vibrations while driving. I would start to look at the front end.

A common cause of vibration when idling is - Your car has hydraulic engine mounts. The mounts are pressurized and lose their "charge" and sag. Then the engine may rest against the subframe or if not, the vibration of the engine is transferred directly to the the subframe due to the flat engine mounts.
The solution is new engine mounts. If you grab the oil cap and try to more the engine left and right - with good mounts it will move, with deflated mounts it does not. Earlier cars you could tell by the placement of the water pump fan in the should - but a 94 has an electric fan

my first thought was the same - did you check out the motor mounts? then after that, the transmission mounts? Finally, I'd look at exhaust mounts. Not too many moving parts here. Also, is the engine in reasonably good tune? A poor tune (air leaks, weak spark etc) can exacerbate the shakes.
