Stereo location, early versus late 240s

I just ordered a new head unit for my '84 240 wagon. I'd prefer to install it up top, like the later model 240s. My question is, on the later model 240s, what is in place of the stereo under the ash tray? I found what I think is a cubby hole on eBay, but I'd rather not guess.

Thanks,
Jim

Cubby hole. Kind of felted on the inside like the glovebox. Can I buy your old stereo off of you? I kind of like the look of the original Volvo radios.

Thanks for the info. That is what I was looking at on ebay. Unfortunately my stock radio was replaced with a Clarion cassette player of a similar vintage. I did find this on ebay:

Hope this works for you.

Thanks again,
Jim

is the clarion a single DIN? Funny thing, I'm actually thinking about putting mine in the cubby instead of up top. Eventually, I'm thinking I'll put the turbo gauges in...

It is an old Clarion, digital but with knobs. I'm not sure it is an actual DIN size or not.

I don't know if this will help but my 90 and 93 240s look like this (with the kids aftermarket Kenwood)

Thanks soundmiami. That is kind of what I had in mind. Here is my current stereo and its location:

According to UPS my new head unit and satellite radio interface are on the truck for delivery today. I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve. A FedEx truck just drove past my window. STOP TEASING ME!

That was the before, and this is the after...

Sony Xplode head unit with iPod and satellite radio interfaces. The old radio must have come from Crutchfield as well, since the install was plug and play. My two minor gripes are that I wish I had known the velour pocket was in there already since I bought one off eBay. My other minor gripe is that the wires for the rear speakers were too short to move up to the new head unit. No big deal, I need to replace all four speakers. When I do that I'll simply run new wire.

Im sure this is a newb question but any help would be appreciated. And how hard is it to move it from the lower compartment to the upper???
