Stereo in top slot in 240?

We've been enjoying our decision to keep my wife's '83 240 sedan. The Sony receiver we had installed when it was new has developed bad contacts, so we lose 2-3 speakers at a time in what seems to be a random order.

I think it's time to treat ourselves to a new stereo for the old dear. What would be nicest is to use that little top compartment instead of trying to look and fiddle with a stereo in the bottom compartment in the console, where the Sony now is. It kind of comes down to whether to adjust the radio or be able to have your head looking through the windshield.

How hard is it to move the harness up to the top compartment?

I know we can find units to fit the top area, as we've found them in Crutchfield's online catalog. We'd either buy from a local retailer, or buy one from Crutchfield and would buy one of their prepaid-local-installation cards. I'd welcome any advice you folks can share.

Thanks in advance

RE: Stereo in top slot in 240?

I did receive, off-forum, a very useful reply, and am grateful. My wife and I ordered a nice Alpine stereo (more than the Blue Book value of the car!) and plan to have our installation done this coming Friday...it will be in our top slot.

This will leave the bottom slot open and bare. The installer will run a cable for my wife's iPod into that slot, but now comes the question: where do I find the liner or whatever you call it to make the slot into a nice-looking pocket? I imagine I might be able to craft something, but it would be great to buy the one Volvo used in those slots.

Thanks in advance to all...

Leave it in the bottom and get a radio with a remote.
