My 4 speed manual transmission just took a dive in my 1980 dl 4 door beast and i want to know if i can bolt in a m47 5 speed manual.

 

Should be doable... Just get as many parts from the donor car as possible. The speedo will be a problem: the M45 is a cable, the M47 electric...
Oh, and may be some drive shaft length issues...

 

the M46 4-speed+OD is a stronger, more robust transmission than the M47 5-speed

yeah, for sure, get the drive shaft from the donor car.

 

I was gonna say drive shaft too. Also if you get an M46 with the overdrive from a 240 it should have the cable drive for the speedo. Just double check to make sure. I think the back half of the driveshaft is the same on all of them, its the front half that varies with the tranny. but I'm probably wrong, hahaahaha.

 

There is different size drive shafts.
Best to just grab the whole thing as they are balanced.
