So tomorrow I am going to pick up a 75 244 GL that has trans problems...

I'm new to the Volvo world and am excited to get into this 244. It's a beautiful car, just needs a little love to be back on the road. Here's what I know:

-transmission will drive in R and D but will not up-shift (kick down cable?)

-when last started (3 weeks ago) seller says it didn't want to idle properly, like it wanted to die when in neutral or park, this is when he noticed it not shifting...

could it's low idle be causing it not to shift?

any help is greatly appreciated... again, this is my first encounter with the Volvo world, so bare with me, i may ask some stupid questions...

 

tedv, bubba, cbevis, tech....etc...any thoughts?

 

Check the fluid, if it's ok, the tranny is probably bad.

 

Fluid was low and dirty... I will drain and refill with fresh after i change kick-down cable, which has about .5-1" of play when adjusted as tight as it will go... seems too loose to me... any other thoughts?

I guess I did get lucky... I scored a known good BW35 from a friend so I'll just do the swap and see what happens...
