Transmission problem?

Hi everyone,

I have an 85 - 740 GLE with 380000 KMs. Lately when my car is really cold, the transmission doesn't want to shift out of second gear, and sometimes I feel the transmission has disengaged - I kept reving the engine but the car doesn't go, but everything is okay once the car is warmed up - the transmission seems to shift normally without any problems.

Any ideas? Should I be worry about it, is my transmission about to go? Your expert opinion is greatly appreciated.

John

How long since transmission drain, flush and refill? Always a good place to start with symptoms like yours.

Most likely you are about to need a transmission... You can try prolonging its life with some additives such as TransX and such, "tune-ups in the can", as it were, but especially with the kms on the car, well, it doesn't owe you anything.

I will try the drain, flush and refill method, if it doesn't work I will get some additive afterward, thanks for the help.

RE: Transmission problem?

Sounds very similar to a problem I had back in December. Mine's an 89 240 automatic. Thought I needed a tranny. Check the kick down cable. Mine was binding up around something up on that drum thing and was tensioned all the time. didnt want to get out of 2nd gear until warmed up. I had to run the rpms up then jerk my foot off the pedal, I could "persuade" it to make its last shift. Check that out or maybe lube the cable a bit. Worked for me. Would be a good idea to do new fluid too... Dave
